TORONTO - Canada's largest city appears headed toward a garbage strike just past midnight as the head of the union representing Toronto's outside workers says his union and the city are "very far apart" as the clock ticks down to the strike deadline.
Mark Ferguson, president of Toronto Civic Employees Union Local 416 CUPE, says if there's no deal by the 12:01 a.m. Monday deadline, there will be a walkout.
Ferguson says negotiators for the union and the city have made small progress over the past couple of days but a number of concessions remain on the table.
He says he has one message for the city - "wake up and let us get this deal done."
The two sides, which are resuming bargaining Sunday with a provincial mediator, exchanged monetary proposals Saturday but other issues including sick leave, seniority and recall rights in the event of layoffs remain in dispute.
If there's a walkout by Toronto's inside and outside workers, curbside garbage collection would grind to a halt, along with various other services including those provided by child-care centres and recreation programs.
