A hospital official says 20 women waiting to get free flour in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi died when the crowd around them swelled and a stampede began.



Mohammad Amin Khan of Karachi Civil Hospital says the death toll from Monday's incident could rise. Footage from local television stations showed panicked relatives arriving at the hospital, while others brought limp bodies in the backs of trucks. Some women cried while lying on stretchers. (AP)

KARACHI: Eighteen women and children were crushed and suffocated to death due to stampede during free distribution of ration in Khori Garden area here on Monday.

Like previous years, the ration was distributed free this year too by a trader Chaudhry Iftikhar in a densely populated area of Khori Garden in Jodia Bazar where hundreds of women had come for ration collection.

But the crowed went out of control running over one another in an attempt to collect the ration which led to a stampede and as a result 18 people including women and children died of suffocation and crush injuries.

The bodies and injured were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi.

According to CCPO Karachi, Wasim Ahmed confirmed 18 deaths quoting the medico legal officer of the Civil Hospital.

The CCPO said that adequate arrangements were not in place at the distribution point while police was also not informed about the program.

The Karachi police chief said that trader Chaudhry Iftikhar has been arrested and it will be determined after proper investigation as to what extent the responsibility of the incident falls on him.

Meanwhile, taking notice of the incident President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah ordered for submission of investigation report. Directives have also been given for provision of best medical facilities to the wounded.

پاکستان کے شہر کراچی میں مفت راشن کی تقسیم کے دوران بھگدڑ سے چودہ افراد ہلاک ہو گئے جن میں زیادہ تر خواتین ہیں۔یہ واقعہ اس وقت پیش آیا جب کراچی میں واقع کھوڑی گارڈن میں جو کہ جوڑیا بازار میں واقع ہے، مفت راشن کی تقسیم کی جا رہی تھی۔ اطلاعات کے مطابق لوگوں کے رش کی وجہ سے حبس ہو گیا جس کے بعد بھگدڑ مچ گئی اور کئی افراد ہلاک ہو گئے۔

مقامی ہسپتال میں میڈیکو لیگل افسر نے بتایا کہ ہلاک شدگان میں تین کمسن بچیوں سمیت چودہ خواتین شامل ہیں جکبہ وزیرِ اعلیٰ سندھ کی مشیر شرمیلا فاروقی نے اخبار نویسوں کو بتایا کہ مرنے والے اٹھارہ ہیں۔ ہمارے نامہ نگار ریاض سہیل نے جوڑیا بازار سے بتایا ہے کہ ڈی سی او نے میڈیا سے بات کرتے ہوئے چودہ خواتین کی ہلاکت کی تصدیق کی ہے۔

اطلاعات کے مطابق کھوڑی گارڈن میں راشن تقسیم ہو رہا تھا جہاں پر تین سو سے چار سو افراد جمع تھے۔ اس ہجوم میں قطار بنانے کے مسئلے پر جھگڑا شروع ہوا جس کے وجہ سے بھگدڑ مچ گئی۔ چونکہ یہ علاقہ ایک گنجان آباد علاقہ ہے اس لیے یہاں سے نکلنا بھی مشکل تھا اور زخمیوں کو ہسپتال پہنچانے میں بھی کافی مشکلات پیش آئیں۔

یہ واقع کھوڑی گارڈن کی کچھی گلی میں پیش آیا جہاں افتخار نامی ایک شخص پچھلے دس سال سے مفت راشن تقسیم کر رہے ہیں۔ یہ راشن اس گلی میں افتخار منزل نامی ایک بلڈنگ کے سامنے بانٹا جاتا ہے۔

عینی شاہد ذلفا بیگم کے مطابق بھگدڑ اس وقت مچی جب راشن بانٹنے والوں نے عورتوں کی بڑی تعداد کو دیکھتے ہوئے بجلی بند کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا تاکہ عورتیں واپس چلی جائیں اور راشن اگلے روز بانٹا جائے۔ تاہم بجلی بند کرنے کی وجہ سے پنکھے بھی بند ہو گئے اور تاریک گلی ہونے کی وجہ سے اندھیرا ہو گیا۔

ڈی سی او نے میڈیا سے بات کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ چوہدری افتخار کو جنہوں نے اس راشن کی تقسیم کو بندوبست کیا تھا پولیس پوچھ گچھ کے لیے لے گئی ہے۔

KARACHI: Seventeen women and a 13-year-old girl were killed, and another 15 injured, during the free distribution of flour and other supplies at a wholesale market on Monday.

Saddar Town Superintendent of Police Abdullah Sheikh said the incident occurred at a stall set up to distribute free food at local philanthropist Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s warehouse. “Thousands of women crammed into the narrow lanes of Khori Garden in Jodia Bazaar to take advantage of the offer. When the organisers felt the women was getting out of control, they closed the door, causing a suffocating atmosphere,” said Sheikh. He said the panicking women then attempted to leave at the same time, causing a stampede. However, local police official Hashmat Ali told AFP a private security guard tasked with ensuring the women formed an orderly queue had baton-charged them, scaring them and causing the stampede. “I have lost my little daughter,” cried Karima in hospital. “All I wanted was a bag of flour for my family, but my greed lost me so gravely,” she added.

Their fault: Some bystanders claimed the women had brought the tragedy upon themselves by displaying impatience. “The women were very undisciplined. It was not the organisers’ fault because the women were constantly trying to break the queue,” said one female witness.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, President Asif Ali Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain expressed their grief over the incident and ordered an immediate investigation. The Sindh government also announced Rs 100,000 for each of the aggrieved families.

Case registered: South Zone Deputy Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon said the government had arrested Chaudhry, who has been distributing food for charity for over 10 years. “A special team led by SSP Investigation Farhat Junejo has been formed to probe into the incident,” Memon added.
