Bushfire season: High alert as South Australia faces day of extreme danger
LIVE Updated 35 mins ago
EDITOR ON DUTY: Colin James
FIREFIGHTERS continue to tackle a blaze burning near Willunga Hill as extreme fire conditions develop across the state just days into the fire-danger season.
The fire, which began at Kyeema on Tuesday afternoon, is now burning in scrub near Yundi, with fears it could reach nearby homes.
Police are patrolling bushfire-prone areas and aerial bombers remain on standby, after temperatures hit 40.1C in Adelaide.
Total fire bans are in place across most of the state with north to north-east winds expected to increase throughout the day, increasing the fire danger.
Operation Nomad patrols today will target known firebugs by visiting their homes and checking on their whereabouts.
Police ask anyone who notices suspicious activity or people in fire danger areas to contact the police assistance line on 131 444.

The Kyeema fire is getting closer to homes at Yundi. One resident, Rob, has lived on Burma Road for 30 years. He has evacuted his wife, two dogs and a horse but is planning to defend this property. He spent the night helping CFS volunteers fight the fire in scrub near his home. He told The Advertiser that fire breaks had been created to contain the fire. "We have to watch what happens with the wind from now on," he said. "What we found last night was it was chopped and changed a lot."
