Nidal Hasan was convicted Friday of the Fort Hood massacre — a verdict that came as a surprise to absolutely nobody in the courtroom. Some of the survivors of of the bloodbath that left 13 dead and more than 30 wounded began crying when the verdict was read, but Hasan — dressed in Army fatigues with an American flag patch sewn onto one sleeve — sat quietly in his wheelchair, his face a mask. Hasan, who had served as his own lawyer, admitted in his opening statement that he was the shooter and made barely any attempt to cross-examine the dozens of witnesses prosecutors put on the stand. As a result, it took the 13 officers sitting in judgment of Hasan just seven hours to find him guilty on all 32 counts of premeditated murder. Next, they must all decide whether Hasan deserves the death penalty for the slaughter on Nov. 5, 2009. Otherwise, the 42-year-old religious fanatic could spend the rest of his life in prison. Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, has made it clear he wants to die “a martyr” for his warped cause. “I’m paraplegic and could be in jail for the rest of my life,” Hasan, who was shot in the back by officers responding to the rampage, told investigators after the attack. “However, if I died by lethal injection, I would still be a martyr.” “Evidence will show I was on the wrong side of America's war and I later switched sides," Hasan told the court. “We in the mujahideen are imperfect beings trying to establish a perfect religion.” It was a brief but jarring opening argument from Hasan, who said he shed American blood to protect Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. Even if Hasan is sentenced to death, he might not get his wish. There are currently five soldiers, on the military’s death row and there hasn’t been an execution since 1961. Howard Ray, a retired Army staff sergeant who just missed being hit by Hasan’s bullets, said, “Justice has been served.” The verdict sends the message the Army “isn’t going to mess with this kind of terrorism,” Ray told the Associated Press. From the outset of the $5 million trial — the most expensive military trial ever — Hasan acknowledged he was guilty. But Hasan, a son of Palestinian immigrants who grew up in Virginia, was barred from pleading guilty from the start, because military prosecutors were seeking the death penalty against him. So, Hasan set about sabotaging his own defense by refusing to counter testimony from witness after witness who described how he hatched a plan to barge into the post's Readiness Processing Center to join other soldiers preparing to deploy to Afghanistan ... and unleashing hell. The dead ranged in age from a 19-year-old private to a 62-year-old civilian employee. The defense attorneys assigned to help Hasan defend himself asked the judge, Col. Tara Osborn, to let them take over. Osborn said no and gave Hasan enough rope to hang himself. — With News Wire Services Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/army-maj-nidal-hasan-guilty-counts-killing-13-fort-hood-2009-article-1.1435070#ixzz2cp4KqQnU
