A father, his two sons and another child were shot dead in front of their school in France by a lone gunman today.

The attack came at about 8am, just before the start of lessons at the Jewish school in the south-west city of Toulouse.

Local prosecutor Michel Valet said the 30-year-old man and his three-year-old and six-year-old sons were killed in the shooting.

He said another child, between eight and 10 years old, was also killed, and a 17-year-old seriously injured.

The killer rode away on a scooter. The shooting happened in the same area where a gunman on a motorbike opened fire on three uniformed paratroopers at a bank machine in Montauban, 30 miles away, last Thursday, killing two and critically wounding the other.

That attack was near the soldiers' barracks. Four days earlier, a gunman on a motorbike shot and killed another paratrooper in Toulouse.

Authorities said at the time that forensic analysis showed that the same weapon was used in the shootings in Montauban and Toulouse.

It was not immediately clear if all three shootings are related.

Meanwhile police cordoned off the private school in Toulouse, and several hours after the shooting children were still inside.

President Nicolas Sarkozy accompanied by Richard Prasquier, the president of CRIF, the umbrella group representing Jewish organizations, were heading to the scene.
