Haiti's biggest earthquake in 200 years

President Aristide was toppled and exiled to south Africa for defending the interests of his own people. It is shameful for the Americans to have such an impoverished nation next door. But one must admire what Obama is doing by helping the people and the destroyed country.

Israeli SS (IDF) is having a human face in Haiti and a monster one in Palestine. It is like Goebels boasting about German SS paving roads in destroyed Soviet Union. ne was known to donate to the Church. The hands of both German and Israeli SS are stained with blood that can't be washed away by a public relation exercise.

I saw a huge Qatari jumbo jet delivering aids. Muslims are usually more generous in helping others than the Israeli beggars.

It seems that everything tha Israelis have been doning was merely for the sake of peace and all the killing of Arabs was in self defence. Let me start with Deir Yassin. All men of this small and peaceful town were hanged in one afternoon in 1947. Did anyone bring charges against Shamir, Begin of Sharon? Why the Jews expected the Arabs to keep quiet while their Palestinian brother were slaughtered in clod blood? If some one kills Jews he must be punished but no one punishes the Jews when they kill Arabs. Why the Israelis expect the Arabs to keep quiet when they joined the French and the British to invade Siani in 1956? Has any Jew went to prison for the killing of 3000 Palestinains at Sabra and Shatilla in Israeli-occupied Beirut in 1982? Has anybody asked Israel to pay for the destruction of Iraq nuclear reactor which did cost $one billion? If there is no justice, the Arabs will take the law in their own hands and will settle scores whenever they get a chance. In this regard any Arab who accepts USraeli pressure and prostitutes the Palestinian cause will be considered as a traitor. I thought the Israelis also killed Itzhaq Rabin when talked about withdrawing behind 1967 borders and implementing UN Security Council Resolutions.

Haiti’s Natural Disaster–Made in Israel?

by Mark Glenn

“Good things come to those who wait”, as the old saying goes. For me, it was an email I received this morning from one of the dozens of lists I am on. In this case, it was a link to a story appearing on an Israeli news site written some time ago entitled “Israel Makes Waves by Simulating an Earthquake” that read in part as follows–

“The Seismologic Division of the Ministry of National Infrastructure’s Geophysical Institute will attempt to simulate an earthquake in the southern Negev on Thursday. The experiment, financed by the U.S. Defense Department, is a joint project with the University of Hawaii and is part of a scientific project intended to improve seismological and acoustic readings in Israel and its environs, up to a 1,000 km/621 mile radius.

The experiment intends to improve the understanding of sound waves in the atmosphere. Scientists will then be able to fine-tune Israel’s seismological equipment to give advance warning of earthquakes. Measurements will also be taken in other countries, including Cyprus, Greece, France, and Germany.

Israel will create a controlled explosion of 80 tons of explosive material, which will simulate the intensity of a tremor after an earthquake of Magnitude 3. Natural earthquakes of a similar intensity occur in the Middle East region about once a week, without the public feeling them.

In the last few years, the Geophysical Institute has created several earthquake simulations in order to calibrate its equipment. In June 2004, the institute detonated 32 tons of explosives in the southern Negev. In June 2005, the institute detonated 20 tons in the Beit Alfa quarries in the Jezreel Valley south of the Galilee. The success of the experiments has significantly contributed to improving the accuracy of identifying earthquakes in Israel.”

So, in other words, the notion that “interested parties” can cause earthquakes is not as much an “Art Bell” topic as some may think. The fact that Israel is up to her ears in this kind of business and working alongside the US Department of Defense of all entities is rather interesting as well. Those who would scoff at such a notion should recall that years ago when a few brave souls were claming that Israel had developed an “ethnic bomb” (specifically-designed to kill those of Arab descent) and that the Jewish state was stealing organs of Palestinians they were called everything in the book from conspiracy theorists to anti-Semites. Now these are established facts,

As with all things taking place in our topsy-turvey world these days, the one question that must be asked time and again is “Who Benefits?” When news of the earthquake hit and it was obvious that the centerpiece of the coverage was not the suffering of the Haitian people but rather the fact that Israel was leading the charge in bringing humanitarian relief certainly caused my bushy eyebrows to raise a little. Added to this is the fact that the US sent 10,000–TEN THOUSAND–troops to the region, and not the National Guard types more suited for rescue-relief type work but rather PARATROOPERS is something worth noting as well.

Besides the obvious benefit to Israel’s image resulting from such an event where she morphs from a bloodthirsty killer of dark-skinned Palestinian and Lebanese women and children to the rescuer of dark-skinned Haitians, there is the other possibility to consider–that this was used as a demonstration to the rest of the world that a new weapon of war had been developed, one whose devastation could not be attributed to another country but rather would be seen as an “act of God” to everyone but the leaders of a particular country in the crosshairs of Israel and the US.

Would Israel, working in collusion with the US Defense Department go so far as to cause an earthquake by strategically placing nuclear weapons in certain geologically-sensitive places, thereby causing the deaths of tens of thousands in order to gain a PR victory from it at a time she is universally despised around the world?

Well, perhaps we should ask the 1.5 million Iraqis killed in the aftermath of 9/11 brought about by Israel’s Mossad for the purpose of bringing about the “war to end all wars” between the Islamic and Christian worlds.

THE POOREST COUNTRY IN THE AMERICAS

Haiti was the world's first black republic and the first Caribbean state to achieve independence, but decades of violence, instability, dictatorship and coups have left it the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere.

* Hundreds killed in political violence
* Riots over rising food prices
* One of highest HIV infection rates in the Americas

Most of Haiti's 9 million people scrape by on less than $2 a day and the country is awash with weapons, fuelling endemic violence.

Much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, is at the mercy of armed gangs. Killings and kidnappings are rife.

A U.N. peacekeeping force numbering just under 9,000 troops and civilian police has struggled to quell the violence.

Both criminal gangs and political militias - supporters and opponents of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide - have been blamed for the bloodshed.

Haitians voted for a new president in 2006 - the first poll since Aristide was ousted in 2004 amid an armed rebellion. The election was won by Rene Preval who was backed by the poor masses in the slums but mistrusted by the same wealthy elite who helped send Aristide into exile.

In the spring of 2008, violent protests over rising food prices pitted U.N. peacekeepers against thousands of hungry Haitians. The riots led to the fall of the government.

Just months later four deadly storms slammed into the country killing hundreds and badly affecting up to 1 million people in one of Haiti's worst ever catastrophes.

FACTBOX-Haiti quake had shallow source, packed big punch
13 Jan 2010 20:17:15 GMT
Source: Reuters
Jan 13 (Reuters) - The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, toppling buildings and killing possibly thousands, was the most powerful to hit the impoverished Caribbean state in more than a century.

Here are comments from international seismologists about the Haiti quake:

DR DAVID ROTHERY, PLANETARY SCIENTIST AT BRITAIN'S OPEN UNIVERSITY:

"The earthquake that struck Haiti yesterday was so devastating because as well as being large (magnitude 7.0) its source was at a shallow depth of about 10 km (6 miles). Closeness to the surface is a major factor contributing to the severity of ground shaking caused by an earthquake of any given magnitude. Furthermore, shaking tends to be greatest directly above the source. In this case the epicenter was only 15 km (9 miles) from the center of the capital, Port-au-Prince, which therefore suffered very heavily.

MICHAEL BLANPIED, ASSOCIATE COORDINATOR FOR THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS PROGRAM:

"The island of Hispaniola -- and Haiti lies on the western side of the island -- is caught between two tectonic plates. The North American and the Caribbean tectonic plates are shearing the island, crushing it, grinding it and as that occurs, earthquakes pop off. The island has not suffered an earthquake of this size for over a century".

"Earthquakes cause disturbance of the ground in a number of different ways. Wherever there are steep slopes or coastal areas there's likely to be landsliding and that can bury homes, or block streams, rivers, block roads and so forth, so there's a hazard. The only positive thing about this earthquake is that because it did occur on land it did not generate a tsunami."

DR ROGER MUSSON, SEISMOLOGIST AT THE BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY:

"The situation in Haiti is similar to the San Andreas Fault in California in that two plates are sliding past one another. The fault in this case is called the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault. This fault has been locked for the last 250 years gradually accumulating stress which has now been released in a single large earthquake."

PROFESSOR ROGER SEARLE FROM THE EARTH SCIENCES DEPARTMENT AT DURHAM UNIVERSITY IN BRITAIN:

"This quake was magnitude 7, equivalent to the energy release of about half a megaton of TNT ... To date (1400 GMT Jan 13) the USGS has recorded 33 aftershocks greater than magnitude 4.5 (large enough to cause at least minor damage).

DR BRIAN BAPTIE, SEISMOLOGIST OF THE BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY:

"Earthquakes of this size always have aftershocks that can last for many weeks. These always punch above their weight, affecting buildings that have already been damaged and hampering relief efforts."

Thousands are feared dead after a 7.0 magnitude quake rocked Haiti on January 12 at 1653 (2153 GMT). It is the most powerful quake to hit the impoverished country in more than 200 years.

The tremor struck 15km (10 miles) south-west of the capital Port-au-Prince, and was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude.

Many buildings have been destroyed, including a five-story building at the United Nations headquarters, hillside shanties and the presidential palace.

January 12, 2010, Los Angeles, Calif. - International Medical Corps is deploying an Emergency Response Team to Haiti after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck just 10 miles off the coast of the capital, Port-au-Prince. A hospital is reported to be collapsed, according to the Associated Press, and a tsunami watch has been issued for parts of the Caribbean.

International Medical Corps is assembling a team of first responders and resources to provide lifesaving medical care and other emergency services to survivors of the earthquake. This response draws on 25 years of experience in emergency settings, including last September's earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia, and the massive 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.

Since its inception nearly 25 years ago, International Medical Corps' mission has been consistent: relieve the suffering of those impacted by war, natural disaster and disease, by delivering vital health care services that focus on training. This approach of helping people help themselves is critical to returning devastated populations to self-reliance. For more information visit our website at www.imcworldwide.org.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the island nation of Haiti yesterday, causing widespread damage and claiming untold lives. The earthquake is one of the worst ever recorded in the region. Haiti's ambassador to the U.S., Raymond Joseph, called it "a catastrophe of major proportions."

Several airlines serve Haiti, including Air Canada, American, Delta, and Spirit. So far only Spirit has announced a travel waiver, and will allow customers traveling to, from, or through Haiti between Wednesday, January 13, and Friday, January 15, to change their reservation without paying a fee or the difference in fare. Other airlines that fly to Haiti may announce similar policies later today, but travelers scheduled to depart soon should call their airline directly.

SNAPSHOT-Haiti Earthquake - 0540 GMT
16 Jan 2010 05:38:05 GMT
Source: Reuters
PORT-AU-PRINCE - Haitian authorities say as many as 200,000 people died in the quake that devastated the Caribbean nation and three-quarters of the capital, Port-au-Prince, would need to be rebuilt. Gangs of robbers had begun to prey on survivors living in makeshift camps on sidewalks and streets strewn with rubble and scattered decomposing bodies. For details, see [ID:nHAITI] NEWS

* The United Nations appeals for more than half a billion dollars for Haiti and says it is already providing aid despite anger among survivors that they are getting nothing.

* U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will fly to Haiti to get a firsthand look at the earthquake relief effort as well as to help evacuate some Americans caught up in the disaster.

* Haiti gives the United States control of its main airport to bring order in the skies to aid flights from around the world.

* Seeing Haiti's earthquake aftermath from the sky is when the enormity of the disaster that hit the Western hemisphere's poorest nation last Tuesday really sinks in.

* Relief supplies are pouring in by air, land and sea but logistical hurdles and the scale of destruction is still preventing aid from reaching hundreds of thousands of victims.

* U.S. and Haitian authorities impose tight restrictions on aircraft bound for Haiti due to crowding and logistical hurdles.

* Haiti's earthquake moved Hollywood and pop music stars to lead a rally for disaster relief donations and open their own wallets, led by Haiti-born hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean.

* U.S. cellphone users contribute more than $11 million to earthquake relief through text messages in what is being hailed as an unprecedented mobile response to a natural disaster.

* U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says that aside from some scavenging for supplies and minor looting the security situation on the ground remains "pretty good."

* Local radio stations are broadcasting messages for people to put their dead out in the street to be picked up by trucks and taken to a mass grave.

* The U.S. military aims to have about 1,000 troops on the ground in Haiti on Friday, and thousands more in ships off shore.

* The U.S. eased restrictions permitting Haitians already in the United States illegally to stay for up to 18 months, but made it clear it would not apply to Haitians who try to enter now.

* The earthquake that struck Haiti could not have been predicted, experts say, but seismologists have made progress in identifying areas likely to suffer major quakes in the future. QUOTES

"These people have lost everything, They have nothing. They have been waiting for two days now. No one is helping us. Please bring us water or people will die soon." -- resident Renelde Lamarque, who has opened his yard to about 500 victims.

"We've been cooking rice with vegetables but there are no vegetables left and the chicken has stopped laying eggs." -- Andre Simon, 49, an office worker who set up his family in a tent made of wooden poles and bedsheets.

"We have to make sure that the situation doesn't unravel, but for that we need very much to ensure that the assistance is coming as quickly as possible" -- U.N. Undersecretary General for Peacekeeping, Alain Le Roy.

"Some aid is slowly getting through, but not to many people." -- Margaret Aguirre, a senior official with International Medical Corps.

"I heard the shots and got out of there. The police told us it was too dangerous to stay. People were looting and a body was being burned." -- a foreign photographer, who asked not to be identified.

"The key is to get the food and the water in there as quickly as possible so that people don't in their desperation turn to violence or lead to the security situation deteriorating." -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

"We have lost everything. We are waiting for death. We have nothing to eat, nowhere to live. We have had no help. No one has come to see us." -- quake victim Andres Rosario, speaking at an improvised camp set up by survivors at a rubbish dump in Port-au-Prince.
