16 dead in triple bombings of oil hub Basra

Eleven dead in Iraq attacks
Thursday, November 03, 2011
SEVEN people were killed last night when three bombs hidden in motorcycles exploded in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.<
Major Majid Hussein of Basra police said the bombs went off near cafes where young people were socialising.

He said 24 people were injured in the blasts.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. It was unclear whether the violence was the work of a Sunni group such as al-Qaida, which rarely operates in the overwhelmingly Shia city.

"It is hard to control such terrorist acts," said Ahmed al-Sulaiti, deputy head of Basra provincial council.

Also yesterday, two people were killed when a roadside bomb went off in the northern city of Mosul.

In Kirkuk, a 12-year-old boy and his father were killed by a bomb attached to their vehicle.
