Karachi: The University of Karachi would not have any male students after ten years. It’s not my prophecy. It is what the statistics of the university predict.

Out of the 30,000 students of Karachi University, about 22,000, or 73 percent, are girls. In 2006, the percentage of girls in enrolment was 60 percent, which has risen by more than two percentage points every year. If this trend continues, we will see only female students at the KU in the next decade.

There are several departments which might give a foreigner the impression that the Karachi University is a girls-only institution: e.g. international relations, political science, economics, social work, education.

The situation is different in the science faculty. It seems girls have frightened away the boys from here as well.

The only places where the number of boys is nearly equal to girls are mass communication and business administration. The department of women studies has quite a large number of male students, but those are mostly the ones that need the KU identity card to be inside the university. They hardly ever attend classes.

This trend of enrolment has worried some people. Prof Raziuddin Khan, who has been teaching physics at KU since the 1970s, says this trend is not encouraging. He says boys are ignoring physics which is not a good sign for the nation.

A male student at the university, who did not want to be named, said most of the boys that are seen at the campus are affiliated with political groups and they come here to work for them. “If there were no political groups at the campus, you would not see even this small number of boys.”

A Karachi University teacher used to call the mass communication department ‘female ward’ in late 1990s. If he were alive and teaching today, he would say the whole university has turned into a female ward.
