Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaei Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaei says Nowruz celebrations held by many countries can bring about unity and forge cultural bonds among nations.

“Nowruz is the common language of millions of people in Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Balkans, the Black Sea and many other parts of the world,” Khazaei said in an address to the UN General Assembly on the International Day of Nowruz in New York on Tuesday.

He went on to say that more than 300 million people across the world celebrate Nowruz.

The Iranian diplomat noted that Nowruz celebrations mark human values that have been handed down from generation to generation throughout centuries.

“Nowruz has the potential to prepare the ground for establishing deep cultural ties and promote human values among all nations,” he emphasized.

The International Day of Nowruz was registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on February 23, 2010.

The first day of spring and the renewal of nature, Nowruz, is mostly celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

Nowruz is an ancestral festivity that promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighborliness, thus contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among different peoples and communities.
