Daylight saving time starts
Sunday, March 9th at 2 a.m.
Don't forget to turn your clocks forward one hour

The weekend most Canadians spring forward one hour is also the ideal time to tackle seasonal safety projects we often put off--even if we did just lose one hour of sleep! But, given that a lot of the routine maintenance on your home and car should be done twice a year, what better time then now to start checking items off your "To do" list?

Around the house
Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and test to make sure they still work.

Even if the batteries are not dead, changing them will ensure they are working when you need them most.

After a full winter's worth of use, your furnace may require some attention. Make an appointment to have your furnace cleaned and inspected by a qualified technician so that it's ready for next winter.
Clean gutters and downspouts to remove debris that may have accumulated during the winter. If clogged, spring showers can wreck havoc and possibly cause leaks.
Hopefully you'll soon be using your BBQ. Check the tank and hose for leaks or crack,s and replace if necessary. Don't forget to fill the tank up while you're at it because you never know when the weather might be ideal for the first BBQ of the season!

In your car
Wiper blades should be replaced every six months so now is the ideal time to replace them.
Your car's belts and hoses have dealt with extreme cold, snow, salt and sand in the last few months. Get them checked to make sure everything is connected properly and running smoothly.
A change of season equals a change of oil. This will help to ensure your car operates at peak efficiency. Don't forget about the other fluids too, like the transmission fluid and anti-freeze/coolant. Check your owner's manual for directions.
If you change your tires seasonally, you'll want to soon consider putting your summer tires on. Store your winter wheels in a cool, dry location, laid down flat and stacked on top of each other no taller than 4 feet high.
If you don't change your tires seasonally, you'll want to make sure your tires are ready for this summer's road trips. Consider getting your tires rotated and your tire pressure and treads checked. If your tires are misaligned or your pressure is off you'll notice irregular and uneven wear on your treads, reduced vehicle handling or decreased gas mileage.
