An iconic Melbourne landmark, The Richmond Malt is up for sale presenting a rare opportunity for the right investor or property developer.
Situated in Cremorne, Victoria, on the banks of the Yarra River, the site has been home to brewing industry since the late 1800s. The Malt is home to the iconic Nylex Clock sign, which has been lighting up Melbourne’s inner east skyline since 1961.
A rare slice of inner Melbourne
Iconic sites such as the Richmond Malt don’t come onto the market often. Listed by commercial real estate agent Colliers International, the sale offers an opportunity to make an impact on Melbourne’s landscape.

What’s next for Nylex?
The site has previously attracted interest from developers when restoration projects were proposed in 2002 and 2004. The new buyer will have some heritage rules to abide by as the Nylex sign itself, (installed by South Melbourne company Neon Electric Signs) is listed and protected by the National Trust. A new owner could again light the city with the sign.
Jeremy Gruzewski from Colliers International says 11,340m² piece of land area would suit retail, residential and other commercial opportunities.
“This site will become a mixture of old and new with the new developments complementing the heritage listed sign and portions of the old brewery building along with some of the smaller silos which will all remain,” says Gruzewski.
“There’s so much potential here and we’ve had a huge amount of interest from developers. Once this site opens up, people will have direct access to all the popular attractions in this area without having to go around the large silos.”

Industrial turned chic – a global trend?
The transformation of industrial sites into something new is a popular trend.
The famous High Line in New York was developed as a green space from an old railroad track which is fitted with pieces of artwork and offers a sanctuary away from the crowded streets of the Big Apple. Another old railroad converted into a green space (and where the High Line took it’s original inspiration), is the Promenade Plantée in France.
With this once industrial area already turning into a very hip and trendy spot for Melbournians, perhaps the next up and coming green space will be located in Cremorne.

The Nylex Clock featured in Australian singer Paul Kelly’s song “Leaps and Bounds”, where the band actually played on top of the tower.
