Ibne Hassan alias Shabbu Bhai, 58, a manager at General Tyres, was shot dead as he was walking toward his car to drop off his grandson to the school, Saudabad police said. Two armed men on a motorcycle came close to Hassan and shot him. The victim was shot once in the neck and died shortly after the incident, DSP Fakharul Islam told The Express Tribune. The body was taken to Jinnah hospital and was later handed over to the family. Hassan had no personal enmity and the investigation suggests that he was killed over sectarian basis, said DSP Islam. The police have yet to register the case. Following his murder, several people staged a protest and blocked traffic on National Highway, Malir, Jafar-e-Tayyar Society and Saudabad. The protesters burnt tyres and shouted slogans against the killings of the Shia community members. The protesters later dispersed after peaceful negotiations with the police but DSP Islam feared the law and order situation may again be disturbed during his funeral planned for late night. The Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen also condemned the incident. Maulana Sadiq Raza Taqvi said the government and law enforcement agencies have failed to stop the targeted killing of the Shia community. Rehman Malik said authorities had learned militants might be planning to target the crowd, and that the cleric, Muhammad Tahirul Qadri, would be held responsible for any attacks.
"The best commandos are with me today," Malik told a news conference, saying security forces could take action against Qadri within the next two days to prevent "expected terrorism". "I hope that he listens to me."
Qadri, who backed a military coup in 1999, is calling for the immediate resignation of the government and the installation of a caretaker administration to oversee electoral reforms. The government was rocked on Tuesday by a Supreme Court order for the arrest of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf within 24 hours on suspicion of corruption. Qadri's appearance at the forefront of Pakistan's political scene has fuelled speculation that the army, which has a long history of involvement in politics, has tacitly endorsed his campaign in an effort to pile more pressure on a government it sees as inept and corrupt. Qadri and the military deny this. Pakistan's information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said political leaders would not bow to Qadri's demands. "All political parties are happy with the Election Commission and elections will happen on time," he said. He added that elections would take place as scheduled between May 5 and 15. The opposition Pakistan Muslim League led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif also rejected Qadri's call for the military to play a role in the formation of a caretaker government to oversee the run-up to elections. "Tahirul Qadri is working on somebody's agenda to derail democracy in Pakistan and we reject all of his demands," Sharif told a news conference. Qadri's appeal has cast fresh uncertainty over the government's effort to become the first civilian Pakistani administration to complete a full term. The military has ruled Pakistan for over half of its 65 years since independence. Current chief General Ashfaq Kayani has vowed to keep the military out of politics. Prime Minister Ashraf remained a free man on Wednesday since officials said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which would carry out the arrest, had not yet received direct orders. The officials said the NAB chief would go the Supreme Court on Thursday to discuss the issue. The ruling coalition, led by the Pakistan People's Party, has a majority in parliament and its lawmakers can simply elect another prime minister if Ashraf is ousted. In June, Ashraf replaced Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, who was disqualified by the Supreme Court in a previous showdown between the government and the judiciary. PHOTO: FILE KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader and MPA Syed Manzar Imam was shot dead by suspected Taliban gunmen in Karachi’s Orangi Town locality on Thursday, along with two police guards and a driver. Minutes after Imam left his home in the congested Orangi neighbourhood; five men on three motorcycles intercepted his Toyota Corolla car near Nishan-e-Haider Chowk and sprayed it with bullets, according to the police. “It was a well coordinated attack,” said DIG West Javed Odho. “We have found over 40 casings of bullets fired from 9mm pistols and submachine guns.” Imam, 43, was hit by eight bullets in the head, face and chest, causing his immediate death. The police initially said that the attackers had used AK-47s. According to media reports, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the attack. “I can’t say with certainty which banned extremist outfit is behind it. But the MPA had a confrontation with some religious elements in the area,” said Odho, who refused to explain what he meant by ‘confrontation.’ “You must realize that Orangi Town is a difficult area. There were threats to his life. And a possible connection with the murder of another MQM MPA cannot be ruled out,” he added. Odho also said that the two guards with him were policemen, who had been provided for security after they received information that his life was under threat. The police have determined that Imam was a victim of extremist violence, but contrary to what his name suggests, he was not a member of the Shia community and belonged to the Ahle-Sunnat sect. The incident shocked the MQM, which has already lost MPA Raza Haider (whose constituency was also Orangi Town) in a similar attack in 2010 and several workers at a recent bomb blast near its rally. Hundreds of MQM activists, including core party leaders, poured into Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the bodies of the MPA and other victims were taken for medico-legal formalities. The news of his death spread like wildfire throughout the city. Shopping centres, markets and petrol pumps were shut within an hour as people scrambled to reach home, creating traffic gridlocks. MQM leader Wasay Jalil said that Imam did not belong to the Shia community but the involvement of sectarian outfits have not spared anyone. “For the last five years, we have been telling law enforcement agencies to keep a lookout for extremists. They have killed two of our MPAs and attacked our rally. It looks like there is no law in the city,” he added. Jalil said that the MQM will not be deterred by the attacks and continue to press for reforms, which will help counter religious intolerance. The party has announced three days of mourning. Imam rose through the ranks of his party from the bottom rung of the ladder – he started off as an activist in 1986 and was then nominated for a provincial assembly seat in 2008. President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned assassination and directed the concerned authorities to bring the culprits to justice. He expressed his sympathies with the bereaved families. Meanwhile, Sindh Dr Governor Ishratul Ebad Khan also called on the president at Bilawal House, where he discussed the ‘current situation’, according to a spokesperson. HT asks its friends in army to come to the fore NewsComments (5) AAMIR MAJEED Saturday, 5 Jan 2013 3:47 am | Comments (5) KARACHI - Responding to Pakistan Army’s Green Book, the country’s “internal threat” Hizbut Tahrir has called on sincere officers in the armed forces to work with it to get rid of “alleged traitors” in their lines, as the group believes it is time to openly come to the fore before it is too late. “We are the ones Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani called ‘amorphous enemy’ in his speech at the 98th Midshipmen Commissioning term and 7th SSC Officer’s class in Karachi,” an e-mail to Pakistan Today from Hizbut Tahrir (HuT) headquarters’ said. “Earlier, we requested the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is another threat for traitors within the armed forces, to reject talks with the authorities and side only with Khilafah Rashida over Pakistan and Afghanistan.” “Khilafah would establish correct footing for Muslim armed forces as assets available to Islam’s foreign policy, along with political means.” “The Khilafah state would establish massive and comprehensive industrialisation to establish military superiority in weaponry and would help unify all Muslim lands as one state under one Khalifa. The Khilafa would end all occupation on Muslims soil, like the Jewish state and Indian occupation of Kashmir.” “It will eject all hostile actors, such as American presence in Pakistan and will call to other non-hostile, non-Muslim states by inviting them to Islam and rejecting oppression of America and its man-made system.” “So HT calls on sincere officers in the country’ armed forces to work hand in hand with us to rid of these traitors and establish Khilafah in its place,” the e-mail added. Backing its argument, the HT alleged that in the final year of his service, General Kayani was working hard to change the mentality of the armed forces so that after his departure, the war of ‘fitna’ remained in its place. “As it was not enough for him to set a stage for a face-change of political traitors, he has indulged himself in making sure that he is succeeded by military traitors.” “In a significant revision to green book, General Kayani enshrined America’s war of fitna as an inviolable part of the military doctrine, as the US has been earlier pressurising Pakistan to change its India-centric policy and declare the ‘internal threat’ as the biggest threat to the security of the country.” “To change this doctrine and to change focus of our armed forces from India to our own internal tribal territory, General Kayani used the incidents of Abbottabad and Salala attack, as these incidents in reality proved that our actual enemy was the US, but the army chief used these incidents as an excuse to further ignite the war of fitna and burn our sons in the armed forces and the citizens in this war.” “HT reminds all those who care about Islam, its people and Pakistan that this change in doctrine will serve to open a new chapter of humiliation and slavery of Pakistan by non-Muslim states.” “We have requested the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is another threat for traitors within the armed forces, to announce rejection of surrender talks and express stance of siding only with Khilafah Rashida over Pakistan and Afghanistan.” “It is difficult to understand that any of the Taliban would even consider such a peace plan after having sacrificed so much time, effort and the money and spilling so much blood.” “By all accounts, the root and branches of the peace plan seek only to safeguard the US wavering rule in the region and that of its puppets in the Afghan government.” “There is no doubt that this plan is an insult to countless Pakistani and Afghan civilians who have lost their lives in their service to protect Islam and would be despicable affront to thousands of martyrs and tens of thousands of mujahideen who made the US and his allies kneel and search for a hasty exit from Afghanistan.” “The TTP’s only valid political goal is the re-establishment of the Khilafah Rashida, which entails giving the bayah to the Khaleefah who will rule in accordance with the Quran, Sunnah, Ijama Sahaba and Qiyas and any other political outcome, short of this goal is null and void.” “Only the complete implementation of Islam in all walks of life is sought and partial implementation is rejected in all its forms.” =============
