Detection of Deception

Is it a penis, is it a vagina? No, it's an airport!

The New King Abdulaziz International Airport Project challenges a Cleric's straight vision of traditional airport design.

A Saudi Sheikh has contentiously asserted that an airport just north of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia resembles more a penis-and- vagina-combo than an aviation facility. Named after King Abdulaziz Al Saud, (KAIA) the airport is the Kingdom's third largest air facility. The airport occupies an area of 15 square kilometers, and has been around since 1980, arousing little titillation to date.

More recently King Abdullah- Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques- as this defender of the Kingdom's virtue reminds us- approved an extension and renovation plan to build up a futuristic new airport to international standards. Too futuristic, it would seem for this straight cleric who appears to be fixated with the round full female form of the layout. The project has certainly not been blessed by Saudi cleric, Ali Shahrani.

There was presumably no pornographic mandate with the initial site plan that came endorsed by the King himself. The design of the revamped airport , the claimant levels the charge, is like the penis of a man and a woman’s vagina, and contests that it has been conceived (no pun intended- Ed) intentionally in that way in order to provoke or touch Saudi Arabian religious sensibilities. An attempt by corrupt agents to pollute the sacred land. Saudi Arabia is host to one of Islam's holiest sites at Mecca and is regarded as Holy Land.

This arial view of the new New King Abdulaziz International Airport Project reveals what this cleric sees as the woman form, legs splayed in readiness for intercourse; and positioned just below, opportunistically, is the phallic control tower, ready for lift off. (See depiction to the left) Jokes already circulating in the bloggosphere , include scanning the design for the 'cockpit', suggesting cheekily that it lies on the 'wrong side'.

The evocative extension and enterprise is set to set to be ready in 2011, as a 5 year project begun in 2006. The original core design in the 70s was by Fazlur Rahman Khan of the architectural firm Skidmore. But the engineer of this latest sequel innovation has not yet come forward to claim this racy runway site.

A YouTube video posted by the right-of-right cleric depicting his conception of this airport design as intentionally sexual, attracted a tide of visitors to the site seeking to share in this 'bawdy' architectural phenomenon. The sheikh presents a guided tour of the airport that resembles a relic of male and female organ placed at complementary positions to one another. The video, shown in Arabic above, which clocked almost 35, 000, views is now doing the rounds between the Saudis, in a series launched by the Sheikh, "Detection of Deception." Effectively an aricheturally-themed sermon that tackles a number of buildings and installations in the Gulf, containing (his) nuanced interpretations of the buildings' symbolic wicked meaning. It's all rather Da Vinci Code - high intrigue, archticture, design, art, history and theology all mingling curiously.

People's reactions, while mixed, were sometimes overwhelmingly derrogatory and less than amused with this cleric's diverted energies and warped imagination: 'find somehting useful to spend your time and creativity on.' Some called for him, and his supporters, to see a doctor or take biology lessons. Others volunteered sarcastic quips on the female form with jibes on the 'old' or original airport versus this new young girl supplement.

He accuses the agents of architectural iniquity of engineering a woman lying with a hole in the place of her anatomical "vagina", and calling it an airport, then planting a column structure which they labelled the 'control tower'. During his clip he demonstrates the tower being lifed from its place and inserted into the slot, declaring, "This is entirely no coincidence". On that note, he mutters an oath in devotion, seeking refuge with God from these unspeakable representations.

The cleric rounds up his demo, embellishing his lecture with the notion that "the movement of the aircraft is similar to the trajectory of sperm," while continuing to express his dismay that "visitors come to this country, for Hajj or Umrah and are greeted like this. " Sheikh Ali Shahrani accused the agents behind the architectural plan of the airport of waging an affront to the land of the Holy Haram. He holds that the offending structure "is designed to offend the sacred identity of the country of the Two Holy Mosques"- and points to this as evidencing the extent to which 'hateful enemies of Islam' were infiltrating the country. He expounded that such a design stemmed from the perversions and lust and what 'they call' the 'liberation of women'- and asked "Do you achieve their dream of building their icons on the peninsula of Islam." Implying that the airport was a monument or homage to sexual laxity.

On a more practical note, the cost of the airport in Jeddah, western Saudi Arabia 27.11 billion Saudi riyals, and the absorptive capacity of the project is 17 million passengers per year, regardless of any alleged depraved inspiration and premise of the airport design. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, maybe so too is vulgarity.
