* Separation is one Sunni option to win rights -speaker

* Nujaifi statement upsets parliamentary allies

BAGHDAD, June 29 (Reuters) - - Iraq's minority Sunnis could consider secession if the central government doesn't treat them fairly, Iraq's speaker of parliament and most prominent Sunni politician said, but his allies rejected the idea.

Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi said in an interview with U.S.-funded al-Hurra television that Sunnis -- who dominated Iraq under Saddam Hussein -- were growing impatient under the current government, led by Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

"They (Sunnis) feel very frustrated and (feel) that they are second-class citizens, and they are not real partners in power," Nujaifi said.

"This is a very serious issue that should be treated wisely and quickly before things develop to reach the (point where Sunnis are) thinking of a kind of separation to guarantee rights," he said. "We fear that if issues are not administered on a high- responsibility level, the country may divide."

Nujaifi is a senior member of the Iraqiya political bloc headed by former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi. Supported strongly by Sunnis, Iraqiya won the largest number of seats in a 2010 national election but failed to muster a governing majority.

Iraqiya joined a unity coalition headed by Maliki in December, winning important posts such as the speakership.

Several Iraqiya bloc leaders rejected Nujaifi's comments and said they violated a principle of "national unity" the cross-sectarian group had embraced.

"This issue surprised us very much. We as the Iraqiya bloc's lawmakers firmly reject this," Iraqiya legislator Ahmed al-Jubouri said."We do not deny that there are excesses by the central government, but this does not lead us to be separatists and to be heading towards division."

Abdulrahman al-Luizy, an Iraqiya lawmaker, said on Wednesday he was withdrawing from Nujaifi's bloc in protest.

Increasing political tensions could hamper the fractious governing coalition as it decides whether to ask U.S. troops to stay beyond an end-year deadline for their withdrawal.
