A group of Islamic businessman had offered to buy the centre for $1.79 million in the hope of converting it to a community centre which would include prayer rooms and a catering kitchen. “Through the agent, they made me an offer; I was told I could get more than I was looking for,” Mr O’Leary said. “I rejected it on principle. We want Australia to remain Australia and not disappear.” “I’m a right-winger of Irish Catholic background.” Mr O’Leary’s former agent, who did not wish to be named, told The Advertiser, the businessmen’s plan were not to build a mosque, but a large community centre that could cater for up to 100 people. He also claimed the land was not suitable and was not zoned appropriately for the prospective build.
