Australians choose lifestyle over blue chip suburbs

Australians choose lifestyle over blue chip suburbs Danielle Cahill Danielle Cahill 13 OCT 2016 NEWS PROPERTY MARKET TRENDS REA GROUP PROPERTY DEMAND INDEX SHARE Share on Facebook0 Tweet this post Pin this post on Pinterest0 Share this post on Google Plus0 Share this post on LinkedIn36 The most in-demand suburbs in Australia are now areas with attractive lifestyle options rather than just blue chip neighbourhoods, new data shows. The new REA Group Property Demand Index report, released today, shows that overall demand for houses and units is at an all-time high in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. The REA Group Property Demand Index also reveals the most in-demand suburbs in the country – use the interactive below to see how your suburb rates. Demand for all dwellings is up by 17% in the 12 months to September 2016. This year in September alone, demand for houses grew by 3.1% while the demand for units rose by 1.9% over the same period. Play Video REA Group Chief Economist Nerida Conisbee says the report shows the housing market remains strong. “What we’re seeing is that demand on realestate.com.au is at an all-time high, driven predominantly by a lack of supply, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne,” she says. “Despite talk of over-supply and poor demand conditions, this result supports continued price growth in what are considered to be increasingly unaffordable markets.” Demand is rising The REA Group Property Demand Index also reveals the top 10 most in-demand suburbs in the country in both February and September 2016. The data shows that lifestyle factors, rather than prestige, are now driving demand in the housing market. indemand_graphic For houses, the leafy outer suburb of Warrandyte has surged to the top of the demand index in the six months to September, replacing trendy inner-city Prahran. The difference in median price between the two suburbs is nearly $450,000. LJ Hooker Head of Real Estate Christopher Mourd says buyers are looking to live in neighbourhoods with features such as schools or parks that suit their needs. “Really it’s not an affordability piece, it’s an amenity piece. It’s lifestyle and amenity that’s driving it (demand),” he says. Suburbs such as Brunswick, Northcote and Ascot Vale all feature in the top 10 most in-demand areas for houses and all of those neighbourhoods have good cafes, unique local shops, parks, good schools and are close to the city. brunswick_cafe_article Buyers are influenced by lifestyle factors such as good local cafes. Mourd says access to work, good public transport and being near family and friends can also sway which areas buyer choose to target. Suburbs in areas with good infrastructure and lifestyle options continue to influence buyers, according to Conisbee. “Inner-suburban locations feature strongly in areas seeing the most demand from buyers of houses. Warrandyte, which tops the list, is a notable exception,” she says. Play Video For units and apartments, areas like East Melbourne (#1 in February) where the median price is $650,000 are now less popular than suburbs like Manly (#1 in September) where the median unit price is $1.19 million. The high-end suburbs that top the list of in-demand areas for units and apartments in September, such as Manly and Elizabeth Bay, reflect the buying power of downsizers, says Mourd. “Ultimately on the Sydney apartment side of things, those key locations are very much the type of areas where people look to downsize. It’s close to the harbour and very accessible to the inner-west. When you move out of the family home you want to move into a larger apartment and there’s a great collection of them there,” he says. Four of the top five most in-demand areas for units – Manly, Elizabeth Bay, Drummoyne and Bellevue Hill – are all close to Sydney Harbour and offer plenty of great lifestyle options such as good local bars, proximity to the water or beach and unique shops or cafes. “For downsizers moving to ‘cheaper’ accommodation is not an attractive option,” says Conisbee who argues that this group doesn’t want to be too far from town. Supply likely to increase Auction crowd in Mitcham, Victoria More properties are expected to hit the market in the months ahead. As most potential buyers also tend to be sellers who are looking to upgrade the family home, Mourd says the REA Group Property Demand Index shows there is strong demand in the housing market. He predicts as spring moves into summer, more and more people will put their property on the market as they will be more confident of finding a home to buy than they have been in the lead up to spring. “There’s no reason to sit on the sidelines at the moment. Those numbers are showing there’s still a really strong demand and ultimately the only way to meet that demand is by more homes coming on the market,” he says. “I’d encourage anyone who is looking at the moment and isn’t sure which way to move find a trusted agent and get some advice, so you can get the security you require to sell your current home because (now) it’s a very good time in the majority of markets to do that.” Top in-demand suburbs by state Victoria Richmond Edwardian Richmond is one of the most in-demand areas in Victoria. U.S. companies scramble to cope with seven-country immigration ban

• The order bars the entry of foreign nationals from certain countries for 90 days. While no countries are specifically named in the order, it refers to a statute that would apply to seven Muslim-majority nations: Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Iraq.  • There is an exception for certain types of visas, including for diplomats and the United Nations. The temporary halt is aimed at giving the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department and the Director of National Intelligence time to determine what information is needed from each country to ensure that visas are not issued to individuals posing a national security threat.  CHANGES TO SCREENING FOR IMMIGRATION PROGRAMS  • The order calls for a review to create a single process for screening people entering the country, which could include holding more in-person interviews, searches of an expanded database of identity documents or longer application forms.  • The order suspends the Visa Interview Waiver Program, which allows consular officers to exempt some applicants from face-to-face interviews if they are seeking to renew their temporary visas within a year of expiration.  RESTRICTING REFUGEES  • The order calls for the temporary halt of all refugee admissions for four months so the government can study the process and determine if additional checks are necessary, although there will be case-by-case exceptions.  • The order also implemented a blanket ban of all Syrian refugees until "sufficient changes" have been made to the refugee program, without giving more details.  • After the suspension is lifted, the government will give priority to applicants that are suffering religious-based prosecution, but only if they are minorities in their country. Once refugee admissions resume, fewer will be allowed. The 2017 cap was set at 50,000 people, compared to 85,000 designated by President Obama for 2016.  COMPLETING THE "BIOMETRIC ENTRY-EXIT TRACKING SYSTEM"  • The system is aimed at tracking foreign visitors' arrival and departure using information like finger prints. Former President Barack Obama's administration had aimed to start implementing biometric exit checks at the country's largest airports by 2018. Reuters/Cathal McNaughton U.S. companies scramble to cope with seven-country U.S. companies scrambled on Saturday to cope with the fallout from President Trump's executive order on immigration, with Google urgently calling back employees from overseas and companies rushing to provide legal advice and assistance. Trump's order bars citizens of seven countries from entering the United States even if they hold valid visas or permanent residence permits, a move that caught many companies off-guard. Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said in an email to staff that more than 100 Google employees were affected by the order, according to a Google executive. One Google employee of Iranian nationality with legal U.S. residency made it back to the United States just hours before the order took effect, the executive said. "We're concerned about the impact of this order and any proposals that could impose restrictions on Googlers and their families, or that could create barriers to bringing great talent to the U.S.," Google, part of Alphabet Inc, said in a statement. "We'll continue to make our views on these issues known to leaders in Washington and elsewhere." Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a company-wide email posted on LinkedIn that 76 company employees were citizens of the seven countries in question and held U.S. work visas, and thus were directly affected by the order. ADVERTISEMENT . He said the company had not determined how many people with green cards, or permanent residence status, might be affected. "As a company, Microsoft believes in a strong and balanced high-skilled immigration system," Smith said in the email. "We also believe in broader immigration opportunities, like the protections for talented and law-abiding young people under the Deferred Access for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program, often called "Dreamers." Smith also said: "We believe in the importance of protecting legitimate and law-abiding refugees whose very lives may be at stake in immigration proceedings." Facebook had no comment beyond a Friday blog post from CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in which he said he was "concerned" about the order and voiced support for immigrants. "The executive order on immigration is immoral and antithetical to our values. It's also deeply flawed as a matter of policy and will undermine our economy and our security in the long term," Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO, of cloud-based file-storage group Box, said in a company email. Trump administration seeks to muzzle U.S. agency employees: sources

Tue Jan 24, 2017 | 5:35 PM EST U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during the Inaugural Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders Reception in the Blue Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., January 22, 2017. Reuters/Joshua Roberts Trump administration seeks to muzzle U.S. agency... X By Valerie Volcovici and P.J. Huffstutter | WASHINGTON/CHICAGO U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has moved to curb the flow of information from several government agencies whose mandate impacts environmental issues since last week, in actions that appeared designed to tighten control and discourage dissenting views. Employees at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Interior Department, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have seen directives from the newly minted leadership seeking to limit how they communicate to the public, according to multiple sources. The moves have reinforced concerns that Trump, a climate change doubter, could seek to sideline scientific research showing that carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels contributes to global warming, as well as the career staffers at the agencies that conduct much of this research. All of the agencies affected by the actions have some input on issues related to the environment and have been involved in various efforts related to climate change, including effects on natural resources and human health. On Tuesday, a source at the EPA said that staff had been told by members of the Trump administration not to speak to reporters or publish any press releases or blog posts on social media. EPA staff have also been asked not to publicize any talks, conferences, or webinars that had been planned for the next 60 days, the staffer said, asking not to be named. Asked if the EPA had been gagged, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Tuesday: "I don't know ... we're looking into it. ... I don't think it's a surprise we're going to review the policies, but I don't have any info at this time." The agency also was asked by the White House on Monday to temporarily halt all contracts and grants pending a review, according to multiple sources. The EPA awards billions of dollars worth of grants and contracts every year to support programs around environmental testing, cleanups and research. Environmental groups reacted with outrage. New York's attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, said in reaction to the freeze that his office "will examine all legal options to ensure the EPA meets its obligations to keep our state’s air and water safe." ADVERTISING inRead invented by Teads The Department of Agriculture also has seen efforts to curb communication. On Monday, staff at the department's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) were asked in an email to suspend the release of "any public-facing documents." "This includes, but is not limited to, news releases, photos, fact sheets, news feeds, and social media content," the email said.  The ARS focuses on scientific research into the main issues facing agriculture, including long-term climate change. The Department of Agriculture disavowed the email on Tuesday, saying in a statement that it was released without "departmental direction and prior to departmental guidance being issued" and that peer-reviewed scientific research would still be published. "ARS will be providing updated direction to its staff," the statement said, without providing additional details. Officials at HHS also received a memo ordering them not to send “any correspondence” to other public officials. Instead, they must refer any requests for information to senior leaders, who are not to do anything until they have received instructions from the White House staff on its policies, according to a source who read the memo. Last week, staff at the Interior Department were told to stop posting on Twitter after an employee retweeted posts about the relatively low attendance at Trump's inauguration, and about how the issues of climate change and civil rights had disappeared from the White House website. The department has since resumed tweeting. On Tuesday, Badlands National Park, part of the Department of Interior, posted a series of Tweets about climate change: "Today, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher than at any time in the last 650,000 years. #climate," one of the tweets read. Trump has promised to promote oil drilling and mining by cutting regulation, including by targeting former President Barack Obama's initiative to combat climate change. Trump also has suggested pulling the United States out of a global pact on climate change signed by nearly 200 countries last year. Trump's nominees to run the EPA, Interior and the Department of Agriculture - Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, Representative Ryan Zinke of Montana and former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, respectively - are awaiting Senate confirmation. Trump has drawn heavily from the energy industry lobby and pro-drilling think tanks to build a team charged with preparing the EPA for its new leadership, according to a list of the newly introduced 10-member team seen by Reuters on Monday. An EPA spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (Additional reporting by John Walcott; Additional reporting and writing by Richard Valdmanis; Editing by Leslie Adler)

SA locals urged to be more resilient

By Mike Osborne - AAP on January 23, 2017, 4:42 pm Share Tweet Email South Australians have been urged to be more resilient to better cope with emergencies like last year's statewide blackout. A report into the response by emergency services and government departments has found that despite their approach being somewhat ad-hoc they handled the situation well. Former SA police commissioner Gary Burns, who conducted the review, said the officials and volunteers deserved praised for their efforts, dedication and commitment. He said too often criticism was levelled at response agencies, particularly over the time taken to provide help. "Much of this criticism comes from individuals and groups in the community who need to be far more resilient and take responsibility for their own safety," Mr Burns said in his report on Monday. Commenting after its release, he said a large number of South Australians had unrealistic expectations on the assistance they should receive. "People should accept that in events like this you're not necessarily going to get an SES van at your door straight away," he said. "People need to look at what they can do for themselves." Mr Burns' report includes more than 60 recommendations which the state government says it will respond to once they have been properly considered. They include police developing an evacuation plan for the Adelaide CBD and for the appointment of a fulltime recovery coordinator. Branson Speechless: Perth Man Gets Rich In 2 Weeks True Financial Freedom Sponsored The report also called for a state plan be developed to manage the consequences of a major blackout and for SA Health to review its emergency management arrangements. The state plan should include public information strategies, the identification of key providers for fuel and arrangements for the distribution of food. Another recommendation suggests traffic lights in the CBD and on major arterial roads be fitted with uninterrupted power supplies to ensure the effective movement of vehicles. September's statewide blackout came as SA was lashed by severe thunderstorms and destructive winds which brought down major transmission lines in the state's mid-north. Most of Adelaide was without power for several hours but the blackout lasted for several days in some regional centres. Emergency Services Minister Peter Malinauskas said many of the recommendations in Mr Burns' report had significant budget implications but it was important for South Australia to build its resilience to natural disasters into the future. Robin Lewis Ive been saying for years that with the de-industrialization of South Australia long with moving to old power source to green power. We need to invest in upgrading the power network as a whole. All while still not being overly costly and having a green power source that would be a replacement base load power generation. Independent review for problem SA overpass

Independent review for problem SA overpass AAP on January 23, 2017, 3:30 pm An independent engineering company will be asked to conduct a review of an overpass in Adelaide after it shifted on its base, raising safety fears and causing the closure of a major arterial road for four days. Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan says the review will identify what caused the pedestrian and cycling overpass over South Road to shift. Gargasoulas, 26, has a history of mental health and drug abuse issues and police say he was also involved in a domestic stabbing incident at 2am on Friday. After attacking his brother, Gargasoulas is accused of storming into his mother's ex-boyfriend, Gavin Wilson's, housing commission apartment and demanding the keys to his Holden Commodore. The 76-year-old said Gargasoulas came into his flat with a Bible, set it alight and threw the burning book into his face before threatening to gouge his eye out. 'He asked me twice for (the keys) and I said "no, I'm not giving it to you",' Mr Wilson said in an interview with Seven News. Mr Wilson said he threw the burning Bible on the floor and Gargasoulas punched him. Gargasoulas then drove into a street crowded with pedestrians in Melbourne's city centre during the lunchtime rush on Friday, killing at least four people, including a child, and injuring around 20 others, police said.   Among the four people killed were a man in his 30s, a woman in her 30s, and a young child.  Officers had earlier in the day tried to intercept the vehicle, but called off the chase before he entered the downtown area because he was driving so erratically and they feared a chase through the city might endanger the community.  Gargasoulas is now in hospital after being shot in the arm by police, who dragged him from the vehicle.    Shocking mobile phone footage captured the moment the maroon vehicle performed burnouts outside Flinders Street Station before driving into crowds of shoppers on busy Bourke Street at about 1.30pm. Gargasoulas was wearing nothing but red underwear when he was detained by police at the Elizabeth Street end of the mall. He remains under police guard in St Vincent's Hospital and is yet to be questioned.  An insight into his disturbed state of mind has been granted via recent posts on his Facebook page, which claim he was not Greek Tongan, but rather: 'Greek islamic kurdish ANGEL OF CULT' (sic). He also posted: 'I'LL TAKE YOU ALL OUT ... YOU NEED AN ARMY TO TAKE ME'.  +32 +32 Gargasoulas, known as ‘Jimmy’, is pictured, left, with a tank and, right, in Melbourne. 'A male deliberately drove into pedestrians in the Bourke Street mall, and we currently have three deceased and at least 20 injuries,' police said earlier on Friday. They later updated the number of injured people to 24 people. Of those 24, four are children. The baby's mother watched in horror and, as people ran for their lives in the ensuing chaos, she was heard desperately begging: 'Where is my baby?' In a video, provided by Melbourne's Most Wanted Lads, part of the infant's crumpled pram can be seen laying next to a set of traffic lights, with the child nowhere in sight. Disturbing footage shows the pram surrounded by other victims, some sitting up while medics tend to them, while others lay motionless on the pavement.  +32 Heartbreaking: A pram was left abandoned by the side of the road after being hit by the car and dragged down the street  Horrific scenes after Melbourne driver ploughed through shoppers Loaded: 0% Progress: 0% 0:00 Previous Play Skip Mute Current Time 0:00 / Duration Time 1:46 Fullscreen Need Text more videos 1 2 3 Watch video Serena Williams hits out at journalist in post-match presser Watch video Refugees have their first taste of swimming at Australian beach Watch video She speaks! 'I saw the car on the footpath and I saw the people out of the corner of my eye fly in the air... There were three or four contorted bodies on the ground,' she said. 'I could see the people on the footpath that had been run over.'  Sharn Baylis told The Age she gave CPR to a man who could not be saved.  '[The driver' was going around 60km/h but it seemed faster... People were literally just flying like skittles, bouncing off the bonnet and smashing into the shops,' she said. Police have confirmed it was not a terrorism related incident.  At 2am on Friday, Gargasoulas is believed to have stabbed his brother in Windsor, in Melbourne's south east, after reports of an argument between the two, according to Nine News.   'Crazed Melbourne driver' smiles and waves to a news camera just hours before carnage Laughing and waving his red baseball cap at television cameras, this young man appears to be without a care in the world. But just hours later, police believe the same man sped down Bourke Street Mall in Melbourne's city centre, killing three people and injuring at least 25. This footage was captured during the Today show on Friday morning, as 9 News journalist Neary Ty reported from Windsor at the scene of a stabbing.  As she does a piece to camera, a maroon Holden appears in the left-hand corner of the shot, before a man leans out the window. He removes his red baseball cap and starts goofing off, before turning back to the steering wheel and driving off.  Police believe the same car was later used to mow down pedestrians in Melbourne's city centre. +32 This is the moment a man driving a maroon Holden appeared in the background of a Today show broadcast about a stabbing in the suburb of Windsor, Melbourne Reporter interrupted during live cross by Melbourne rampage driver Loaded: 0% Progress: 0% 0:00 Previous Play Skip Mute Current Time 0:00 / Duration Time 0:22 Fullscreen Need Text more videos 1 2 3 Watch video 'Raptor 13' officer filmed as he investigates P-Plate drivers Watch video Van driver gets blocked in by another driver, and he has no idea why Watch video 'Serbia's sexiest singer' Milica Pavlovic suffers wardrobe slip Watch video Injured dog lead strangers 3km to puppies in abandoned car Watch video Shocking! Reuters/Sergei Karpukhin/File Photo Oil up on Saudi commitment to cut; U.S. output... X By Ethan Lou | CALGARY, Alberta Oil prices settled up on Monday, as Saudi Arabia's commitments to reducing production offset a report forecasting U.S. output would again rise this year. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has agreed to cut production by 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) to 32.5 million bpd from Jan. 1 in an attempt to clear a global oversupply that has depressed prices for more than two years. Russia and other key exporters outside OPEC have said they will also cut output. Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said on Monday the country will adhere strictly to its output reduction commitment, expressing confidence that OPEC's plan to prop up prices would work. Benchmark Brent crude oil LCOc1 was up 41 cents a barrel, or 0.7 percent, at $55.86 and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude CLc1 rose 27 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $52.64 a barrel.

(9NEWS) The slides will reportedly cost $340,000 to replace and amend. (9NEWS) FTBA Tube slides at Adelaide’s St Kilda Playground will reportedly require $340,000 worth of maintenance work to fix and replace, following a number of injuries to children. The revelations come less than a year after the Salisbury Council spent $600,000 to install the slides at the St Kilda Road playground, and come as a result of a number of reports of broken bones and burns, according to The Adelaide Advertiser. The slides have been closed since April as a safety precaution “after the council became aware of a small number of injuries occurring”, the council said in a statement. The newspaper reports one of the slides will be replaced with another slide that has a smaller incline, which will set the council back $270,000, while a further $70,000 will be spent to reduce the angle of the remaining slide. It is believed the funding will likely come from the council’s next budget. © Nine Digital Pty Ltd 2017 TRENDING VIDEO SpaceX launches and lands rocket for first time since September blast SpaceX has successfully launched and landed its first unmanned Falcon 9 rocket since a costly and complicated launchpad explosion in September. 9RAW: SpaceX launches and lands rocket for first time since September blastNOW 9RAW: SpaceX launches and lands rocket for first time since September blast 9RAW: Passenger plane hit by lightning 9RAW: Passenger plane hit by lightning 9RAW: Stubborn swan walks on tracks in front of train for three kilometres 9RAW: Stubborn swan walks on tracks in front of train for three kilometres No digital Carrie Fisher planned for future Star Wars films No digital Carrie Fisher planned for future Star Wars films 9RAW: Fed-Ex truck forced to slide down steep icy road after brakes failed 9RAW: Fed-Ex truck forced to slide down steep icy road after brakes failed 9RAW: Thrill-seeking kitty takes to the slopes 9RAW: Thrill-seeking kitty takes to the slopes 9RAW: Fighter jet crashes at kids air show in Thailand 9RAW: Fighter jet crashes at kids air show in Thailand 9RAW: Camerawoman caught kicking Syrian refugees 9RAW: Camerawoman caught kicking Syrian refugees 9RAW: Polar bear cub produces surprising demonic cry 9RAW: Polar bear cub produces surprising demonic cry 9RAW: Elderly mother locked in pigsty 9RAW: Elderly mother locked in pigsty 9RAW: 13-year-old struck by taxi saved by backpack 9RAW: 13-year-old struck by taxi saved by backpack 9RAW: US man pays DMV with five wheelbarrows of pennies 9RAW: US man pays DMV with five wheelbarrows of pennies 9RAW: Kamiyah Mobley, kidnapped at birth, found living two states away 9RAW: Kamiyah Mobley, kidnapped at birth, found living two states away 9RAW: Man saves $1068 a month in rent by living in ‘stylish’ storage locker 9RAW: Man saves $1068 a month in rent by living in ‘stylish’ storage locker 9RAW: School band members with disabilities shine 9RAW: School band members with disabilities shine 9RAW: Eleven-year-old piano prodigy impresses marketgoers 9RAW: Eleven-year-old piano prodigy impresses marketgoers 9RAW: Chinese girl allegedly lost in smog 9RAW: Chinese girl allegedly lost in smog 9RAW: Police bodycam captures moment a naked women steels cop car 9RAW: Police bodycam captures moment a naked women steels cop car 9RAW: Mysterious light pillars appear in Canada 9RAW: Mysterious light pillars appear in Canada 9RAW: Refugees feed homeless people in Greece 9RAW: Refugees feed homeless people in Greece Send your photos, videos and stories to 9NEWS Email contact@9news.com.au Large files 9news.wetransfer.com You can remain anonymous. Hamid Naseer Hamid Naseer i personally feel sorry for bad comments here, why posting bad comments based on one sided story?, it means just one short news clip can change people minds, this is very strange...In building business things can get out of hands some times and people can be compensated for their damages..instead of giving interviews on news channel why don't these people go to court to claim the damages???...every project has an agreed start and finish time and agreed workmanship, why these affected people don't go to court and claim their money back???...it simply means the motive here is to bring bad name to company...also doing any business is a team effort, why are people here only blaming the owner of the company??..so sad..
