MOSUL, Iraq, March 12 (Reuters) - Seven Iraqi soldiers were killed by three gunmen in a speeding car on Saturday on the outskirts of Iraq's city of Mosul, where the Iraqi government continues to fight a stubborn Sunni insurgency, police said. The men opened fire on the soldiers' car in Badush, west of Mosul, a police source said. The driver was wounded.

The soldiers, who were dressed in civilian clothes, were shot as they left their unit to go on a break, said the source.

Mosul is seen as Sunni Islamist al Qaeda's last remaining urban base after the group was kicked out of many parts of Baghdad and western Anbar province by U.S. troops allied with local Sunni Arab tribal militias in 2007.

Violence has fallen sharply since the peak of sectarian warfare in 2006/07, but killings and bombings are still common. (Reporting by Jamal al-Badrani; Writing by Rania El Gamal; Editing by Peter Graff and Louise Ireland)
