KABUL, Feb 9 (Reuters) - At least 24 bodies have been recovered and 40 other people are feared dead after avalanches swept vehicles into a ravine and trapped cars in a mountain pass overnight, Afghanistan's Interior Minister said on Tuesday.

Hanif Atmar told a news conference that 2 km of road had so far been cleared but more people remained trapped after the avalanches, which shut the Salang Pass and blocked a 2.6 km (1.6 mile) tunnel through the Hindu Kush mountains.
