Top aide of Sadr killed in Najaf

NAJAF, Iraq (AFP) - Unidentified gunmen have killed a prominent aide of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in the Iraqi city of Najaf, police said on Saturday.

Mohammed al-Garaawi, a member of Sadr's office in the holy city of Najaf, was gunned down in front of his house on Friday, said Najaf police commander General Abdul Karim Mustafa.

"Gunmen driving a Daewoo car assassinated Garaawi in front of his house in Al-Jamiaa neighbourhood and then fled," said Mustafa.

A member of the Sadr office in Najaf confirmed the killing and demanded an investigation be opened into the murder of Garaawi, who oversaw tribal affairs for the Sadr movement.

Najaf, 160 kilometres (100 miles) south of Baghdad, is Shiite Islam's holiest pilgrimage city and home to the shrine of Imam Ali.
