AMENDED: Fire Danger season begins in twelve districts 31/10/2015 The Country Fire Service (CFS) reminds people the Fire Danger Season will begin for twelve districts across the state from November 1st. Warmer and dryer conditions throughout spring has brought forward the season for several districts. CFS State Coordinator Yvette Dowling says now is the time to be bushfire ready. "Just taking some small steps to prepare the home could make a big difference in a bushfire," she said. "Mowing the lawn, clearing the gutters, pruning branches are all simple chores which could prevent a bushfire destroying a house. "Bushfires can happen at any time of the year so it's important as we head into the Fire Danger Season everyone is contributing to reducing the impact of bushfires." Ms Dowling says CFS volunteers will also play a role if needed this season. "Without doubt the greatest asset of the CFS is the 14,000 plus volunteers who respond to incidents across South Australia every day but it's a share responsibility and we ask the community to do their part in preventing bushfire," she said. The Fire Danger Season begins November 1st for: Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Mid North, Murraylands, North East Pastoral, North West Pastoral, Riverland, Upper South East, Lower South East, West Coast, and Yorke Peninsula. Call me , C: 0431 138 537 YORKE Peninsula roads have been allocated $2.7million as part of the state government’s 2015/16 Rural Road Safety Program. Yorke Highway at Minlaton will receive $1.5million for guard fence installation and $1.2million will go toward the Bute-Kulpara road which had been previously announced. Minister for Road Safety Tony Piccolo said nearly $9million will be invested in rural communities to help reduce crashes at identified high-risk locations. “Last year, 74 of the 108 fatalities on South Australian roads were in regional areas and so far in 2015 there have been another 42 deaths,” Mr Piccolo said. “This is a major concern and the government is committed to reducing road trauma in rural areas. “The funds will be used for shoulder sealing, to install new safety barriers and signs, and to remove roadside hazards.” Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths said he was pleased with the announcement. “For the Goyder electorate to receive more than $2.3million (Yorke Highway at Minlaton, Redbanks Road at Mallala and on Templeton Road and Traeger Road at Mallala) from the available $8.8million program is a very good outcome for us,” Mr Griffiths said. “Statistics show the most common type of fatal and serious injury crashes on rural roads is ‘hit fixed object’ crashes so I am very pleased these projects will proceed. “I was also pleased state and federal governments recently agreed to allocate $1.5million to sealing six kilometres of the Clinton Road between Maitland and Port Clinton which has long been a section of road causing concern to the community.” District Council of Barunga West CEO Andrew Cole said the previously announced funding for the Bute-Kulpara road addressed concerns raised by council for many years. “Council is certainly looking forward to each step of the upgrade with a section of road immediately south of Bute next on the list,” Mr Cole said. “This upgrade will assist visitors to the council area coming back for more stays in the future, helping the local economy and businesses to be sustainable.”
