According to initial details, unidentified armed men opened fire at Jafar while he was commuting through the Liaquatabad area on his motorbike. Jafar’s body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Police have started its investigation and more security personnel were summoned to keep the security situation in the area under control. Evidence collected from the crime scene suggested that a 9mm pistol was used in the crime. In the immediate aftermath of Professor Jafar’s murder, professors and lecturers in the province have announced a boycott of educational activities on Tuesday. Apart from his educational duties, Professor Jafar was well known for his sozkhwani and marsia recitals. He was also known for his poetry. It has not been confirmed as yet if this was a sectarian attack. The Shia Ulema council has announced three days of mourning and demanded that the killers be arrested immediately. Shia community members have been targeted in the city by extremists. Sunni Islamist insurgents linked to al Qaeda are regaining ground in Iraq, invigorated by the war next door in Syria and have stepped up attacks on Shi'ite targets in an attempt to provoke a wider sectarian confrontation. One car bomb exploded in a busy Baghdad market, three detonated in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City and another near the entrance of the heavily fortified Green Zone that sent a plume of dark smoke into the air alongside the River Tigris. A suicide bomber in a truck attacked a police base in a Shi'ite town south of the capital, and another blew himself up inside a restaurant to target a police major in the northern city of Mosul. "I was driving my taxi and suddenly I felt my car rocked. Smoke was all around. I saw two bodies on the ground. People were running and shouting everywhere," said Ali Radi, a taxi driver caught in one of the blasts in Baghdad's Sadr City. The Iraq war began shortly before dawn in Baghdad on Thursday, March 20, 2003, with U.S. air strikes on the capital. Shortly afterwards, President George W. Bush, addressing Americans on television late on March 19 U.S. time, said the offensive was under way. Now a decade after U.S. and Western troops swept Saddam from power, Iraq still struggles with insurgents, sectarian friction and political feuds among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish factions who share power in the government of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. In a sign of concern over security, the cabinet on Tuesday postponed local elections in two provinces, Anbar and Nineveh, for up to six months because of threats to electoral workers and violence there, according to Maliki's media adviser Ali al-Moussawi. No group claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks, but Islamic State of Iraq, a wing of al Qaeda, has vowed to take back ground lost in its war with U.S. troops. But security officials say al Qaeda's local wing is regrouping in the vast desert of Anbar province bordering Syria and suicide bombers have carried out attacks nearly twice a week since January, a rate not seen for several years in Iraq. Further complicating security, thousands of Sunni protesters are also rallying in Anbar against Maliki, whose Shi'ite-led government they accuse of marginalizing their minority sect since the fall of Sunni strongman Saddam. Syria's war next door is also whipping up Iraq's volatile mix. Iraq is exposed to a regional tussle for influence between Turkey, which backs Sunni rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad, and Shi'ite Iran, the Syrian leader's main ally. Assad's Alawite faith is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam. UNENDING POLITICAL CRISIS After Operation Iraqi Freedom promised to liberate the Iraqi people, Iraq has struggled with a decade that drove the country into sectarian mayhem which killed tens of thousands and the turmoil of a young democracy emerging out of dictatorship. Since the last election in 2010, Maliki's Sunni and Kurdish critics have accused him of consolidating his own authority, abusing his control of the security forces to pressure foes and failing to live up to a power-sharing deal. The political turmoil has only worsened since American troops left Iraq in December 2011, removing the symbolic buffer of U.S. military power and weakening Washington's influence. Iraq's Arab-led central government and the country's autonomous Kurdistan region, where ethnic Kurds have administered their affairs since 1991, are locked in a feud over control of disputed territories containing some of the world's richest oil reserves. Both have sent troops from their respective armies to reinforce positions along their contested internal border. Some of the current tensions may be posturing before the provincial vote and parliamentary elections in 2014, and a full-scale Iraqi breakup looks unlikely. But after more than a year of crisis, rival Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish leaders are hardening positions along sectarian and ethnic lines. "Iraqi politics have not transcended sectarian structures. Meanwhile, armed miscreants torched a vehicle in Landhi. Three clerics of the Deoband school of thought were gunned down in an ambush in Nursery within the precincts of Tipu Sultan Police Station. Police said that three armed men on a motorcycle fired a volley of bullets at a vehicle, hitting 50-year-old Mufti Abdul Majeed Dinpuri, 40-year-old Mufti Muhammad Saleh and 29-year-old Ehsan Ali Shah. The men were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment where the doctors pronounced them dead. Scores of seminary students reached the hospital following the bloodshed and took away the bodies without completion of legal formalities. They also ransacked the emergency ward of the hospital. Meanwhile, miscreants resorted to aerial firing in different areas of the city. Police said that the deceased were heading towards the Jamia-e-Dervaishia, located near the Baloch Colony, from Jamia Farooqia, in Shah Faisal. The funeral prayers of the slain clerics were offered at Jamshaid Road. Scores of seminary students and leaders of various religious organisations participated in the funerals and chanted slogans against the frequent incidents of target killing. The banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan condemned the incident and announced three days of mourning and protest after Friday prayers today. Separately, an ex-president of Markazi Tanzeem-e-Aza was killed near his shop situated in Landhi. Police said that the deceased, 46-year-old Iqbal Masood, was going home from his shop when two armed pillion riders shot at him multiple times, killing him instantly. The body was shifted to JPMC for medicolegal formalities. The deceased was ex-president of Markazi Tanzeem-e-Aza and was currently its office-bearer. A man belonging to the Tablighi Jamaat was killed while another was injured in an armed attack near KDA Chowrangi. Police said armed bikers fired at a rickshaw in which the deceased was travelling along with five other men. A man was shot dead in Baldia by unidentified armed men, who escaped after the shooting. Another man was killed in a cattle pen in the Bhains Colony. The deceased hailed from interior Sindh. In another killing, a man was shot dead by unidentified bikers in Landhi while standing by the roadside. Armed men shot dead a man near Bagh Korangi while he was sitting outside his house. Three bullet-riddled bodies packed in separate gunny bags were found from the Qaimkhani Colony. Police claimed that unidentified people had kidnapped the victims and tortured them before shooting them dead. The three were close friends and were abducted from Orangi Town on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, two more bodies packed in gunny bags were found from Yaro Goth. Police asserted that the victims had been missing from Balochistan and were killed there and their bodies were later dumped in Yaro Goth. Their bodies were brought to the ASH for postmortem. Similarly, tortured body of a man was found from near Askari Park in Old Sabzi Mandi. Police took it to JPMC for autopsy and said that the victim had been shot multiple times. A body wrapped in cloth was found from Rexer Bridge. Police said the victim was dumped there after being killed someplace else. He was a resident of Chakiwara, Lyari, and had been dismissed from Pakistan Rangers and was currently working as a labourer. Meanwhile, a body packed in a gunny bag was found form Ghas Mandi. Police said the victim had been abducted and later shot dead. The body was taken to CHK for autopsy. A handcuffed body of a man was found from Timber Market, Old Haji Camp. An official said that the identity of the deceased was to be ascertained. The body was shifted to CHK for autopsy and later moved to morgue for identification.

A member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, 28-year-old Shahzad Iqbal was killed, and his brother, 22-year-old Dilshad Iqbal, was wounded in a targeted attack near Sir Syed police station on Saturday. They were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Two members of the Sunni Tehreek, 32-year-old Abdul Razzak and 30-year-old Lal Bukhsh, were injured when when two men on a motorcycle fired at them in New Karachi on Saturday. They lived in Surjani Town. They were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. Sunni Tehreek spokesperson Fahim Sheikh said that three of their members have been gunned down in the past two days and the government has failed to arrest the culprits. SHO Muhammad Mohsin said the victims had a criminal record and cases of possessing illegal weapons had been registered against them. Additionally, 35-year-old Dil Rehman, was shot dead in SITE. According to police officials, the killing occurred due to a property dispute and the victim’s brother, Salamat Jan, is the prime suspect in the case. Jan managed to escape before the police arrived. KARACHI: A prominent writer, scholar and custodian of old Eastern traditions, Hakim Mehmood Ahmed Barkati, 87, was shot dead inside his clinic near Taleemi Bagh, Federal B Area on Wednesday afternoon. Barkati was consulting patients at his clinic when two men, dressed in trousers and shirts, parked their motorcycle outside. One of the men, who wore a helmet, stayed outside, while the other one, who had a light beard, entered the clinic. He asked the compounder if Barkati was available, who told him to wait for his turn. “He [the culprit] told me that he’s only here for a meeting and went inside,” said a witness, on the condition of anonymity. “As soon as he went inside, we heard gunshots. He came out and then escaped with his accomplice.” Barkati was shot twice in his chest and neck and died on the spot. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy and was later handed over to his family. His son, Mujahid Mehmood Barkati, who is the former union council Nazim of Jauharabad and a member of the election committee of Jamaat-e-Islami’s district Central, told The Express Tribune that he was on the hit list of the culprits. His father was killed by mistake. Jauharabad police and other family members also agreed. A witness claimed that the same men came to the clinic on Tuesday evening, but left when they found out that Mujahid was unavailable. “Hakim sahib was coming to the clinic on alternate days and I used to fill in for him,” Mujahid told The Express Tribune. “Today, unfortunately, he came in and those men targeted him instead.” Gulberg division SSP Amir Farooqui said that the victim had no personal enmity with anyone and did not have any political affiliation. The police are hoping to publish sketches of the suspects with the help of CCTV cameras installed nearby. The family has yet to register the FIR as they are still in shock, he added. PHOTO: APP KARACHI: At least four people were killed and over 40 injured on Tuesday evening when a powerful bomb went off in Karachi’s Federal B Area, less than half a kilometre from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) headquarters Nine-Zero. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the blast that took place soon after the conclusion of a rally organised by the MQM and Minhaj-ul-Quran International at Jinnah Ground in Azizabad. The MQM announced a day of mourning today (Wednesday). The bomb attack occurred around 7pm, when participants of the “Safar-e-Inqilab-e-Pakistan” rally were boarding their buses to go back home. It damaged over half a dozen buses and coaches and smashed the windows of dozens of vehicles. Several vehicles driving past the nearby Shara-e-Pakistan thoroughfare bumped into each other due to the panic caused by the explosion. Scores of MQM workers reached the site after the blast, and shouted slogans against extremism. Most of the victims belonged to MQM’s Orangi Town Sector. A witness, who was also an MQM activist on security duty at the time, told The Express Tribune that there was no police or Rangers around for protection. “As usual, we were handling the security ourselves, but our focus is normally on making sure the buses get parked and traffic control,” Abdul Aleem said. The explosives were planted in a motorcycle near the buses parked for the pick and drop service. A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) official told The Express Tribune that around two kilogrammes of explosives were used in the bomb planted on a motorcycle. “Ball bearings were also used to maximise casualties – fortunately, the motorcycle was parked between two buses … if they weren’t parked there the damage would have been far more extensive,” he added. The BDS member also said that the evidence collected from the blast site suggested that it was remotely-triggered bomb and that the person who detonated it was present within a 100 metres distance. TTP spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the attack. In a phone call to Peshawar-based journalists, he warned that it was “only the start” and that “more attacks will follow”. No case had been registered till the filing of this report. PHOTO: FILE KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) support for the “million-man march” being organised by Minhajul Quran International (MQI) seems to have had a direct impact on the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Signs of anger and frustration surfaced on Tuesday as PPP leaders suggested to party co-chairman President Asif Ali Zardari to revisit the controversial Sindh Peoples Local Government System 2012. Sources in the Pakistan Peoples Party told The Express Tribune that soon after the MQM-MQI rally, which was addressed by Tahirul Qadri and Altaf Hussain, PPP leaders held a meeting with President Zardari. The meeting was followed by Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf’s visit to Bilawal House where the president and co-PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also present. Sources revealed that the president asked PPP leaders to go ahead with the amendments and pursue the enraged Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F)leadership, Sindhi nationalists and other groups. All Sindhi nationalist parties have already announced that they will not participate in Qadri’s long march. Sources said that soon after the meeting, the Sindh chief minister directed law and local government departments to look into the matter and start “homework” on the local government system again. However, sources said that the final decision will be made after the long march. A senior official in the law department said that they had been given directives to revisit the local government law following the Supreme Court’s remarks in the case. The remotely-triggered bomb hit a convoy of three buses in Mastung district and set one of them ablaze, said Tufail Baluch, a senior government official in the district. “At least 19 people have been killed and 25 injured. All of them were Shia pilgrims,” he told AFP, adding most of those killed were burnt to death. “The bomb was planted in a car. The condition of some of the injured is critical,” Baluch said. Some 180 Shia pilgrims were on their way to Iran in the buses when the bomb ripped through one of them, said Akbar Hussain Durrani, a senior government official in Quetta. One bus carrying some 45 pilgrims was badly damaged, he said. Mastung is some 30km south of Quetta. I’m pleased to cross-post the article on my blog from Daily Times without any editing. (Ali Salman Alvi) Any government can remain in check if the opposition played its role vigilantly and the ruling party’s lapses are reported by the media. However, when media fails to report on sensitive but rampant cases, and the opposition is no better when they come in power but do only lip service to make their position look intact to voters and justified to their critics, it is the responsibility of society to make a note of the ongoing political, social and economic atrocities. For instance, more than 475 Shias have been killed this year in Pakistan to date, with this number increasing every day. The opposition is nowhere to be seen and the indifference of mainstream media to the gravity of the issue is making matters worse. Whilst I hold the federal government responsible for the law and order situation in Pakistan, I cannot give a clean chit to the provincial governments, which ought to provide security to their citizens. A few days ago, my friend Raza Rumi wrote an op-ed titled, ‘Shahbaz Sharif and his admirable running of Punjab’ that was printed in a national daily. Apart from admiring Mr Sharif for the good things done by his government, he expressed his concern about the rise of extremism and militancy owing to the fragile implementation of law in the province in the following words: “There is a perception that the PML-N is soft on extremist and sectarian groups, due to reasons of electoral adjustment and perhaps, ideology as well. This is a serious omission, which might haunt the party if it comes to power in the next election, as there will be no excuse of a ‘hostile’ federal government and its failures to curb terrorism.” I, strongly but respectfully, disagree with the notion that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) leniency towards groups like Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (now working under the label of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat [ASWJ]) is a mere perception. The ‘lovey-dovey’ liaison of the PML-N and ASWJ/SSP is nothing new. The PML-N has time and again sought the SSP’s support to contest elections and the latter has rarely disappointed the former. In the recently concluded by-elections in which Punjab saw a thumping win for the PML-N, the ASWJ announced to support the PML-N’s candidate, Haji Nawaz Chohan, in Gujranwala’s constituency PP-129. The announcement came from the ASWJ’s district president Arshad Hameedi at a religious seminary as the latest display of public affection between the two parties. Electoral alliances are not aimed at charity; these alliances are established as a trade-off between two parties and they are motivated by a shared ideology. In February 2010, the provincial law minister, Rana Sanaullah, visited Jhang on a by-election campaign for a provincial assembly seat. He was seen interacting with Ahmad Ludhianvi of the ASWJ as he took the hardliner cleric to a drive in his open top jeep with official patronage. Is it appropriate for a provincial law minister to take a radical cleric with him on an election campaign? Did Mr Sharif take any action against his law minister for giving an unprecedented protocol to the head of an organisation that considers Shias as infidels? In an interview expressing his biggest concern, the slain former Punjab governor, Shaheed Salmaan Taseer said, “I worry about terrorism. The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)‚ which is in government in the Punjab‚ has old linkages with and a natural affinity for extremist organisations like Sipah-e-Sahaba‚ Lashkar-e-Jhangvi… Let’s face it: terrorists need logistical support from within — somebody funds them‚ somebody guides them‚ and somebody looks after them — and that support is coming from the Punjab… You can’t have your law minister [Rana Sanaullah] going around in police jeeps with [outlawed Sipah-e-Sahaba’s] Ahmed Ludhianvi‚ whose agenda is to declare Shias infidels and close down their places of worship‚ and then say you want harmony in this province. You can’t have the chief minister [Shahbaz Sharif] who is also the home minister‚ standing at Jamia Naeemia pleading with the Taliban to please not launch attacks in the Punjab because he shares the same thinking against the US as they do. What message does this send out to the local magistrate and police officer?” As per the report, ‘Pakistan: The Militant Jihadi Challenge’ by the International Crisis Group published in 2009, “The recent upsurge of jihadi violence in Punjab, the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Balochistan’s provincial capital, Quetta, demonstrates the threat extremist Sunni-Deobandi groups pose to the Pakistani citizen and state. These radical Sunni groups are simultaneously fighting internal sectarian jihads, regional jihads in Afghanistan and India and a global jihad against the West… The Pakistani Taliban, which increasingly controls large swathes of FATA and parts of the NWFP, comprises a number of militant groups loosely united under the Deobandi Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) that have attacked not just state and western targets, but Shias as well. Their expanding influence is due to support from long-established Sunni extremist networks, based primarily in Punjab, which have served as the army’s jihadi proxies in Afghanistan and India since the 1980s. Punjab-based radical Deobandi groups like the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) and its offshoot Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) provide weapons, recruits, finances and other resources to Pakistani Taliban groups…The SSP and LJ are also al Qaeda’s principal allies in the region.” Mr Sharif’s government needs to see the writing on the wall. Promoting, appeasing and pandering to such extremist outfits can win the PML-N an extra seat or two in the next elections but in the long run, it will be devastating for the fabric of our society and the law and order situation in the province. According to another media report, the PML-N and ASWJ has struck a deal on electoral adjustments in the provincial and National assemblies in the upcoming general elections. It is just a matter of time before the two parties end up contesting elections together. I agree that the good things being done by the government must be appreciated but at the same time, we must not condone government officials festering extremism this or that way. On the other hand, in February this year, the Supreme Court of Pakistan expressed its resentment over the performance of the Punjab government when the court was told that several water filtration plants had not yet been completed in the province despite being started many years ago. Non-existent or insufficient infrastructure for clean water and sanitation poses serious health risks. In countries like ours, up to 80 percent of all environmental diseases are because of lack of clean and safe drinking water. Less than 50 percent of Pakistan’s most populous province Punjab has access to piped drinking water. Less than 30 percent of the rural population has access to safe drinking water. Assisting the apex court on polio and hepatitis, Professor Dr Faisal Masood and Professor Dr Javed Raza Gardezi informed the court that the poor and unprivileged class is bound to drink contaminated water because this is all they are being offered. The absence of clean drinking water is resulting in increased infectious diseases like polio and diarrhea. Punjab government is far from being an admirable one. CM Shahbaz Sharif and his running of Punjab can be best described as the old adage goes “Among the blind, the squinter rules.” Instead of dumping billions of rupees running a parallel education system (Danish Schools) Mr Sharif could have made the existing system more viable. We must appreciate the positive steps being taken by the incumbent government but we should avoid going over the top in praise of a government that has many serious questions to answer. The United States has long pressured nuclear-armed ally Pakistan to crack down harder on both homegrown militants groups such as the Taliban and others which are based on its soil and attack Western forces in Afghanistan. In the north, 21 men working for a government-backed paramilitary force were executed overnight after they were kidnapped last week, a provincial official said. Twenty Shi'ite pilgrims died and 24 were wounded, meanwhile, when a car bomb targeted their bus convoy as it headed toward the Iranian border in the southwest, a doctor said. New York-based Human Rights Watch has noted more than 320 Shias killed this year in Pakistan and said attacks were on the rise. It said the government's failure to catch or prosecute attackers suggested it was "indifferent" to the killings. Pakistan, seen as critical to U.S. efforts to stabilize the region before NATO forces withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, denies allegations that it supports militant groups like the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani network. Afghan officials say Pakistan seems more genuine than ever about promoting peace in Afghanistan. At home, it faces a variety of highly lethal militant groups that carry out suicide bombings, attack police and military facilities and launch sectarian attacks like the one on the bus in the southwest. Witnesses said a blast targeted their three buses as they were overtaking a car about 60 km (35 miles) west of Quetta, capital of sparsely populated Baluchistan province. "The bus next to us caught on fire immediately," said pilgrim Hussein Ali, 60. "We tried to save our companions, but were driven back by the intensity of the heat." Twenty people had been killed and 24 wounded, said an official at Mastung district hospital. CONCERN OVER EXTREMIST SUNNI GROUPS International attention has focused on al Qaeda and the Pakistani Taliban. But Pakistani intelligence officials say extremist Sunni groups, lead by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) are emerging as a major destabilizing force in a campaign designed to topple the government. Their strategy now, the officials say, is to carry out attacks on Shi'ites to create the kind of sectarian tensions that pushed countries like Iraq to the brink of civil war. As elections scheduled for next year approach, Pakistanis will be asking what sort of progress their leaders have made in the fight against militancy and a host of other issues, such as poverty, official corruption and chronic power cuts. Pakistan's Taliban have carried out a series of recent bold attacks, as military officials point to what they say is a power struggle in the group's leadership revolving around whether it should ease attacks on the Pakistani state and join groups fighting U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan. The Taliban denies a rift exists among its leaders. In the attack in the northwest, officials said they had found the bodies of 21 men kidnapped from their checkpoints outside the provincial capital of Peshawar on Thursday. The men were executed one by one. "They were tied up and blindfolded," Naveed Anwar, a senior administration official, said by telephone. "They were lined up and shot in the head," said Habibullah Arif, another local official, also by telephone. One man was shot and seriously wounded but survived, the officials said. He was in critical condition and being treated at a local hospital. Another had escaped before the shootings. Taliban spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan claimed responsibility for the attacks. "We killed all the kidnapped men after a council of senior clerics gave a verdict for their execution. We didn't make any demand for their release because we don't spare any prisoners who are caught during fighting," he said. The powerful military has clawed back territory from the Taliban, but the kidnap and executions underline the insurgents' ability to mount high-profile, deadly attacks in major cities. This month, suicide bombers attacked Peshawar's airport on December 15 and a bomb killed a senior Pashtun nationalist politician and eight other people at a rally on December 22. Federal Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, Bashir Bilour’s elder brother, spoke to Express News and said, “We live in a Pakistan where Maulana Maududi, Maulana Abdul Haq Haqqani had signed on the constitution. We don’t know who is a sinner and who is on the right. Were those who signed on the constitution were they Muslims or are these [terrorists] muslims? We just don’t know!”

He added that Bashir never fussed much about security, but he was always accompanied by one or two guards. گردی کیخلاف صف آراء قوتوں کو نشانہ بنایا جا رہا ہے، اللہ بشیر احمد بلور کو جنت الفردوس میں جگہ عنایت کرے، وہ دہشت گردی کیخلاف پرعزم افراد میں سے تھے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ دہشت گرد تمام ان طبقات کو ٹارگٹ کر رہے ہیں جو دہشت گردوں کے مقابلے میں صف آراء ہیں۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ اب بھی وقت ہے کہ اچھے برے طالبان اور دہشتگردوں کی تمیز چھوڑ کر تمام شدت پسندوں کے خلاف آپریشن کیا جائے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ ہر اس پارٹی اور گروہ کو بھی عدالتی کٹہرے میں لایا جائے جو کسی بھی شکل میں دہشت گردوں اور شدت پسندوں کی مدد کرتا ہے یا ان کیلئے ہمدردی رکھتا ہے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ اداروں، سیاسی پارٹیوں اور فورسز کو کالی بھیڑوں سے ۔ان میں سے تین وزراء بشیر بلور، میاں افتخار حسین اور سردار حسین بابک بار بار دہشت گردوں کا ہدف بنتے رہے۔ 11 فروری 2009ء کو اے این پی کے رکن صوبائی اسمبلی عالم زیب پربم حملہ ہوا جس وہ زندگی کی بازی ہار ہوا جس میں دونوں محفوظ رہے۔ اس کے بعد دسمبر2009ء میں سوات سے تعلق رکھنے والے اے این پی کے ڈاکٹر شمشیر بھی دہشتگردی کی کارروائی میں جان کی بازی ہار گئے۔ 19 اپریل 2010ء کو قصہ خوانی بازار میں جماعت اسلامی کی ایک ریلی میں ہونے والے بم حملے میں سابق ناظم حاجی دوست محمد اور ڈی ایس پی گلفت حسین سمیت کئی افراد جاں بحق ہوئے۔ 24 جولائی 2010ء کو صوبائی وزیر میاں افتخار حسین کے اکلوتے بیٹے میاں راشد حسین کو دہشت گردوں نے قتل کردیا۔ عوامی نیشنل پارٹی کے قائد اسفند یار ولی کی بہن ڈاکٹر گلالئی پر 10 اگست کو قاتلانہ حملہ کیا گیا تاہم وہ محفوظ رہیں۔ سابق وزیر داخلہ آفتاب شیر پاؤ پر بھی تین خودکش حملے ہو چکے ہیں جبکہ جمیعت علمائے اسلام کے سربراہ مولانا فضل الرحمان پر دو جبکہ جماعت اسلامی کے سابق امیر قاضی حسین احمد پر بھی خودکش حملے کیے گئے تاہم یہ رہنما محفوظ رہے۔ سوات سے تعلق رکھنے والے ق لیگ کے ایم PHOTO: FILE HYDERABAD / KARACHI: Unrest erupted in Karachi on Friday night when unidentified armed men, riding on motorbikes, resorted to aerial firing, forcing shopkeepers and traders to shut down their businesses abruptly. At around 9:30pm, the sudden wave of firing caused panic and fear among the city’s populace, with a flurry of people rushing home to safety. Anxious commuters caused massive traffic jams in different parts of Karachi, including the main artery of the city, Shara-e-Faisal. Petrol pumps and CNG stations were also closed down. Law enforcers appeared helpless to control or explain the situation, as to who could be involved behind the bedlam. Karachi police chief, Iqbal Mehmood’s phone was switched off, leaving him unavailable for comment. However, the police head of the most affected District Central, DIG Javed Odho, told The Express Tribune, “No firing incident occurred in my district at least”. He added, “Unidentified men contacted shop owners by cell phones and threatened them to close down their shops.” DIG Odho assured that the police would take stern action if they identified anyone involved in the ruckus. Besides District Central, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulberg, Shah Faisal Colony, Malir, Korangi, Pak Colony, Gulbahar, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Burns Road, Saddar, North Karachi, Federal B area and old city areas including Ranchore Lane, Kharadar, Mithadar, Ramswami, Defence Khadda market, and others were also affected. Similar scenes were witnessed in Hyderabad and adjoining areas. Unidentified gunmen fired aerial shots, forcing shops to shut down in several parts of Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Tando Allahyar districts. Although the tense situation continued for over an hour, the police was marked by its absence. No gunman was arrested till the filing of this report. PHOTO: APP/FILE KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain said on Friday that he is currently conferring with legal advisers on a response to the contempt of court against him. In a speech following the court orders, Altaf said that he respects the judiciary and called on party workers to remain peaceful and not to take the law into their own hands. However he struck a defiant note: “Those who had made baseless allegations against the MQM and Altaf Hussain have met their end. Big powers have been trying to eliminate me for the past 35 years but they failed.” The speech was made at an MQM event marking the 26th anniversary of the Aligarh and Qasba Colony attacks in Karachi on MQM supporters. Altaf recounted the events of that day and said that, in all this time, not a single person responsible had been arrested. He said he would provide Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry with video footage of the event through his workers and lawyers. Altaf said that if the current judges of the Supreme Court said in response that they were not present at that time or that the judiciary of that time was not independent, the judiciary is independent today and can take notice of an event even if 10 or 20 years have passed. Altaf also referred to the spate of targeted killings in Lyari in 2011, saying that he sent the videos of these horrific crimes to the judges of the Sindh High Court and the Supreme Court, “which perhaps they could not see because of their busy schedule.” “Those who misconstrue my appeals for friendship and brotherhood as my weakness are daydreaming. They may use brute force against the MQM but the MQM would not beat a retreat,” he said. Referring to the investigation of the murder of MQM Convener Dr Imran Farooq, who was killed in London, Altaf said that the Scotland Yard had said that they wanted to visit the MQM’s office. “We asked them to come and take away whatever they wanted. We told them that they may open any cupboard and carry out their investigation. Our conscience is clear and we had earlier also said that we would extend full cooperation to the Scotland Yard in the investigation.
