THE boss of the State Government’s biotechnology agency has formally denied corruption charges.
Jurgen Michaelis, 57, of North Adelaide, on Monday pleaded not guilty to two counts of abuse of public office arising as a result of an ICAC investigation.
The offences allegedly occurred at West Thebarton on February 29, 2012, and June 13, 2012, when he “improperly exercised a power or influence” he possessed by virtue of his office.
It is further alleged Michaelis had “the intention of securing a benefit for himself or another” person – the court has not been told the nature of that benefit.
Since 2011, he played a key role in the development of biotechnology within SA, including venture capital funds, overseas investment, lab sharing and seed funding.
Dr Michaelis continues to receive an annual salary package of around $370,000 while on indefinite suspension. He will face trial at a later date.
