(ABC: Spence Denny) Map: Adelaide 5000 Some extraordinary thunder woke thousands of Adelaide residents in the early hours as the city and suburbs were lashed by rain. Residents described it as more like a "roll of thunder" across the city than a sudden clap, at about 2:32am. Some said it made their houses shake and windows rattle. Presenter on 891 ABC Adelaide David Bevan told listeners: "For me it sounded like it started way down south and then just rolled over the city and just kept going and going and going." Reporter Spence Denny agreed it was an extraordinary weather event for Adelaide, saying he had experienced nothing like it even when he lived in the tropics. "I reckon that clap of thunder was as loud as I've ever heard," he said. "It did seem to start in the south and made its way right across the city." Callers to 891 agreed, including Don of North Plympton who woke because of the loud thunder, then had to head to his workplace at Torrensville to turn off alarms. "It was enough to set off the alarms in our workshop," he said. (ABC: Spence Denny) SA Power Networks dealt with widespread outages, including in several inner northern and north-eastern suburbs. Adelaide had more than half its average May rainfall in just one night. More than 30mm fell at Kent Town and parts of the Adelaide Hills got about 40mm. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jenny Horvat said it was the most rain for Adelaide in a single May night in about 15 years. "We don't see it that often so this is our highest [single night] rainfall total for the metropolitan area for May since 1999 where we saw 41.2 millimetres," she said. In the poor weather, a man aged 23 from Daw Park was killed in a road accident at the corner of Greenhill Road and George Street at Parkside in the early hours. Police said his car, which hit a tree, was travelling well above the speed limit at the time of the crash. 'Stunned' by the sound of thunder Several ABC listeners took to Facebook to comment on the thunder, including Shellee Craig who said it woke her, her husband and a "petrified" child. "Hubby and I were woken from our sleep and sat there stunned," she said. "Hubby asked whether it was thunder or an explosion - we now have a petrified 12-year-old in our bed - [I am] not sure how our other three kids slept through it though. "Never heard anything like that before in my life." Jonathan McQueen from the north-eastern suburbs said the ground shook. "[It] was massive. Never heard thunder like it. I wondered if it was an earthquake because of the way the ground shook here in Modbury/Highbury for at least two to three seconds," he said.
